Software Engineering Manager, Innovation Engineering (London Hybrid)

Lead Pearson Labs’ innovation engineering team at Pearson VUE, guiding AI, immersive technology, and learning-focused experiments. Turn early hypotheses into validated, demonstration-ready prototypes and help teams make clear scale, pivot, or stop decisions.

Description

  • Oversee Pearson Labs’ daily engineering operations and assign work across an evolving research portfolio
  • Support engineers through feedback, career development, onboarding, and AI-native working practices
  • Coordinate multiple experiments, resolve obstacles, and connect engineers around shared initiatives
  • Define workable standards for prototyping, documentation, experimentation, evidence quality, and demonstration readiness
  • Help teams shape hypotheses, establish measurable goals, and decide whether to scale, pivot, or stop
  • Track portfolio health and communicate progress, risks, and recommendations with clarity
  • Organize customer sessions, showcases, and demonstrations for executive audiences
  • Evaluate emerging technologies, shifting business priorities, and potential areas for Pearson Labs to investigate
  • Manage a distributed engineering team building experiments in AI tutoring, agentic systems, immersive environments, knowledge graphs, voice agents, and novel hardware

Requirements

  • Demonstrated experience managing software engineers and fostering a high-performing, supportive team culture
  • Strong software engineering expertise and the technical judgment to review prototypes, question architecture, and collaborate directly with engineers when needed
  • Experience leading rapid-learning initiatives, including experiments that may be discontinued or discarded
  • Strong prioritization and organizational skills across concurrent initiatives at different stages of maturity
  • A practical, timely, and constructive approach to feedback, coaching, and team development
  • Confidence working with customers, clients, and senior stakeholders and explaining technical work clearly
  • An entrepreneurial outlook with curiosity about evolving technology, learning, and broader business contexts
  • Experience with AI-assisted engineering, coding agents, or agentic workflows, or a strong willingness to adopt them
  • Experience leading distributed or international teams and building cohesion across locations
  • Interest in education, learning science, EdTech, applied research, startups, or innovation environments is advantageous
  • Availability to work from the London office approximately three days per week
  • Willingness to travel occasionally within the United Kingdom or internationally
