Relay Field Technician I

Test and calibrate substation protection, control, and communications systems. Support field engineering work for Qualus power infrastructure clients.

Description

  • Support acceptance testing and routine maintenance of transmission and distribution substation equipment
  • Test electromechanical, solid-state, and microprocessor relaying systems
  • Test pilot channel, control, and communications equipment
  • Check local and SCADA metering
  • Calibrate relays
  • Conduct local and SCADA trip tests
  • Test digital fault recorders (DFRs), sequence of event recorders (SERs), and end-to-end line relay systems
  • Use procedures for different types of relay test equipment
  • Help assigned teams carry out work plans safely and efficiently
  • Stay alert to substation conditions and maintain a strong safety focus
  • Provide computer support for testing as requested by the project lead

Requirements

  • Understand three-phase power systems
  • Understand power system protection and control schemes
  • Know test equipment and its software
  • Field experience commissioning, checking panels and equipment, calibrating relays, and testing and repairing substation relaying and control schemes is preferred
  • Know how to use test equipment, tools, and wiring
  • Interpret wiring and elementary diagrams
  • Have basic testing skills
  • Have basic computer skills
  • Learn and follow client switching procedures and safety measures under direct supervision
  • Use applicable specifications to complete assigned work
  • Be able to work regularly in the field, indoors and outdoors
  • Quickly learn and follow test procedures for different types of substation equipment
  • Be able to push, pull, lift, and bend in extreme weather conditions
  • Lift at least 30 pounds without assistance
  • Have an Associate of Science in Electrical Technology (AET) or equivalent specialized training in system protection
  • Have a valid driver's license and a good driving record
  • Read, write, speak, and understand English
