Lead Engineer, Integrated Planning System - Starbucks Seattle Hybrid

Lead the engineering of Starbucks’ enterprise planning platform, connecting demand insights with supply decisions. Shape distributed systems, AI-assisted decision support, platform reliability, and technical direction.

Description

  • Deliver product capabilities across data, services, and user interfaces from initial concept through production release.
  • Guide architecture and engineering decisions spanning streaming, large-scale data processing, APIs, data models, and user experiences.
  • Build an AI-supported development lifecycle covering requirements, design, implementation, reviews, documentation, and incident analysis.
  • Develop reusable prompts, templates, and safeguards for consistent, secure AI-assisted engineering.
  • Deliver AI-supported decision tools with real-time inference, explainability, summaries, alerts, measurable results, and human oversight.
  • Manage API contracts through validation, naming standards, backward-compatible evolution, and deprecation planning.
  • Strengthen data quality and identity governance through dependable master-data practices.
  • Set performance and reliability goals, design failure recovery, and maintain service-level objectives.
  • Develop engineers through code reviews, paired work, design discussions, and ongoing coaching.
  • Convert business priorities into technical plans while coordinating with product, program, data, and partner teams.
  • Communicate delivery status, constraints, and technical tradeoffs with clarity.
  • Use insights and automation to improve service levels, lower operating costs, and shorten decision cycles.

Requirements

  • At least seven years of experience building and operating large-scale, multi-service platforms in complex enterprise environments.
  • Strong Kafka or comparable streaming experience, including Flink, Spark Structured Streaming, or Kafka Streams.
  • Experience designing dependable data pipelines with stateful processing, schema evolution, backfills, and idempotent patterns.
  • Professional experience with Apache Spark and Databricks.
  • Experience delivering production APIs and services with TypeScript/Node.js, Java/Kotlin, Go, or comparable technologies.
  • Experience with caching strategies and performance optimization.
  • Strong SQL and NoSQL database experience, including PostgreSQL, Cassandra, or comparable systems.
  • Experience with distributed caches, document databases, and/or analytical data stores.
  • Working knowledge of indexing, partitioning, and query optimization.
  • Hands-on Azure, AWS, or Google Cloud experience, including networking fundamentals, IAM, managed-service tradeoffs, and cost-performance considerations.
  • Experience incorporating ML or LLM capabilities into production products, including model serving, prompt design, evaluation, safety controls, monitoring, and feedback loops.
  • Experience with production monitoring, tracing, alerting, incident response, and establishing and meeting SLOs.
  • Secure-by-default engineering experience covering sensitive-data protection, least-privilege access, and auditability.
  • Cross-team technical leadership, including design reviews, mentoring, and delivery through ambiguous problem spaces.
