AI Scientist, Crashworthiness Domain Expert – Mistral AI (France Remote)

Mistral AI is seeking an AI Scientist with crashworthiness expertise to develop datasets, simulations, and evaluation methods for physics-based AI models. The role applies industrial engineering knowledge to model training, validation, and customer-focused use cases.

Description

  • Create and continuously refine simulation datasets for crashworthiness foundation models.
  • Plan and execute high-fidelity campaigns with structural mechanics solvers.
  • Define variation spaces spanning geometry, mesh resolution, material behavior, boundary conditions, loading, contact, joints, failure modes, and engineering KPIs.
  • Develop or oversee automated workflows for simulation setup, execution, post-processing, dataset generation, and model assessment.
  • Train and assess AI models using simulation data in collaboration with research teams.
  • Investigate failures linked to data gaps, insufficient coverage, numerical artifacts, or model constraints.
  • Assess model results against industrial engineering requirements, including accuracy, KPIs, deformation modes, load paths, energy absorption, stress and strain fields, failure indicators, uncertainty, and out-of-domain behavior.
  • Partner with industrial customers to understand workflows and priorities, establish use cases and success measures, and feed their input into model development and validation.

  • Master’s degree or equivalent technical expertise in mechanical, aerospace, civil or structural engineering, computational mechanics, applied physics, or a related discipline.
  • At least 4 years of relevant industrial experience, or a PhD plus 1 year of experience.
  • Practical experience with explicit dynamics for crash or impact simulations.
  • Knowledge of nonlinear FEM, contact, plasticity, structural dynamics, buckling, material modeling, fracture and damage, fatigue, crashworthiness, or durability.
  • Experience validating simulations, correlating models, assessing numerical sensitivity and quality, and defining engineering KPIs.
  • Strong Python programming ability.
  • Familiarity with Git, automated testing, code review, documentation, and other software engineering practices.
  • Hands-on experience working with Linux and HPC systems.
  • Experience submitting and monitoring batch jobs, choosing compute resources, and resolving simulation workflow issues.
  • Ability to run simulation campaigns on a compute cluster.
  • Ability to translate loosely defined industrial challenges into scoped datasets, experiments, metrics, and execution plans.
  • Ability to communicate clearly with technical specialists and non-specialist stakeholders.
