Senior Data Engineer – Bethesda Hybrid

Build resilient data systems and analytics platforms supporting GEICO’s auto insurance business. Apply modern cloud, distributed-systems, and data-engineering technologies to deliver scalable solutions.

Description

  • Define, design, and develop scalable distributed systems
  • Engineer and maintain dependable data systems for an analytics platform
  • Work with Python, SQL, NoSQL databases, Apache Spark, dbt, Docker, Kubernetes, and Azure services
  • Translate product requirements into effective technical solutions
  • Partner with teams across the development lifecycle
  • Facilitate architecture discussions and code reviews
  • Create and support reusable data components and engineering patterns
  • Develop analytics capabilities that meet reporting requirements
  • Coach and guide fellow engineers
  • Promote engineering standards and improve team processes

Requirements

  • Advanced programming and big-data experience using Python, SQL, dbt, Spark, Kafka, Git, Docker, and Kubernetes
  • Apache Iceberg experience is advantageous
  • Experience with Apache Airflow or comparable workflow-orchestration technology
  • Power BI or Superset experience is preferred
  • Knowledge of microservices architecture, REST APIs, and GraphQL
  • Background in system architecture and design
  • Advanced knowledge of DevOps practices, including Azure DevOps
  • Experience implementing CI/CD
  • Advanced PowerShell scripting proficiency
  • Advanced knowledge of monitoring practices and tools
  • Advanced knowledge of security protocols and products
  • Deep understanding of computer science data structures and algorithms
  • Knowledge of developer tools used throughout the data-development lifecycle
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to perform effectively in a fast-paced setting
  • At least 4 years of professional experience in data engineering, programming, and big-data technologies
  • At least 3 years of architecture and design experience
  • At least 3 years of experience with AWS, GCP, Azure, or another cloud platform
  • At least 2 years of experience with big-data technologies such as Spark and Databricks
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or equivalent education or professional experience
