Operational Engineer Rotational Program

CHS Inc.’s rotational engineering program develops experience in oilseed processing, ethanol production, plant operations, and engineering projects. Participants rotate through facilities before moving into a full-time Operations Project Engineer or related role.

Description

  • Complete a structured development program covering oilseed processing, ethanol production, operations, and engineering.
  • Rotate through oilseed and ethanol operations for eight months in Annawan, Illinois; Fairmont, Minnesota; or Evansville, Wisconsin.
  • Support the daily physical operation of CHS facilities.
  • Build knowledge of plant operational processes.
  • Help prioritize and improve key performance indicators.
  • Assist plant management with projects, drawing reviews, equipment specifications, operating narratives, and employee training.
  • Lead continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Analyze production data for accuracy and opportunities to improve facility performance.
  • Complete an eight-month engineering rotation in Annawan, Illinois.
  • Plan design and development work by preparing engineering documents, calculations, drawings, material lists, construction schedules, and operating instructions.
  • Improve processing efficiency and reduce energy and material costs while meeting safety requirements.
  • Support project management activities and oversee construction crews.
  • Coordinate project communications among supervisors, engineering teams, facility department managers, and external consulting agencies.
  • Travel to other CHS locations, including the corporate headquarters in Inver Grove Heights, Minnesota, for instruction and professional development.
  • Move into a full-time Operations Project Engineer position or related role after successfully completing the program.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, such as agricultural, chemical, mechanical, bioproducts, or biosystems engineering.
  • 0–3 years of experience.
  • Basic knowledge of refinery process controls and related process-control equipment.
  • Demonstrated commitment to promoting safety.
  • Strong problem-solving ability and mechanical aptitude.
  • Ability to manage competing demands, changing priorities, ambiguity, adversity, and change.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Highly organized, goal-oriented, and self-directed.
  • Demonstrated mechanical and analytical interest with strong problem-solving skills.
