Managing Attorney, California Workers' Compensation Litigation

Lead California workers’ compensation litigation and litigation-management operations for ICW Group in a senior, hybrid role. Supervise legal professionals, guide complex cases, and oversee financial, operational, and performance outcomes.

Description

  • Manage Litigation Management operations alongside the department Director
  • Design and refine processes that support effective legal operations
  • Support budget development, financial tracking, and business results
  • Lead efforts to strengthen team efficiency and collaboration across legal and business functions
  • Direct personnel delivering litigation and legal services
  • Manage operational activities for In-House Counsel
  • Support strategic decisions aligned with organizational objectives
  • Assess productivity and service quality against client satisfaction objectives
  • Develop and implement improvements to working practices
  • Track financial and return-on-investment objectives, analyze trends, produce reports, and adjust processes
  • Coach attorneys, law clerks, paralegals, and administrative assistants
  • Manage a limited portfolio of litigated workers’ compensation matters through resolution
  • Represent California workers’ compensation cases before courts, administrative boards, the Court of Appeal, and the California Supreme Court
  • Assess complex legal and factual matters and formulate defense strategies
  • Deliver practical, cost-conscious legal guidance and action plans
  • Monitor and circulate updates on legislation, regulations, and judicial decisions
  • Lead the supervision, evaluation, motivation, and development of Litigation Management and support teams
  • Define performance standards and help employees meet them
  • Establish operating rhythms and collaborate with department leaders on performance, results, and customer experience
  • Recruit, onboard, train, assign, and manage employees; conduct evaluations, address issues, and forecast staffing requirements

Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university
  • A Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school
  • At least 8–10 years of workers’ compensation legal experience
  • One to two years of supervisory experience overseeing associate attorneys, paralegals, law clerks, hearing representatives, or support staff
  • Active California State Bar license in good standing, with no public or private reprimand history
  • Advanced experience litigating California workers’ compensation matters, including trial work
  • Comprehensive knowledge of workers’ compensation rules, statutes, laws, legal principles, and practices
  • Proficiency with Excel for preparing financial and performance reports
  • Ability to use software and applications to build automated reports, templates, systems, and dependable data-retrieval workflows
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to present to clients, claims teams, senior leaders, public groups, the Board of Directors, mediators, arbitrators, judges, and juries
  • Proven ability to work independently with limited supervision, maintain a strong work ethic, and take initiative
  • Availability to work weekly from one of the In-House Counsel offices
