Supervising Attorney, Attorney for the Child — Rochester, NY

Lead the Attorney for the Child team at The Legal Aid Society of Rochester, handling Family Court advocacy while guiding litigation strategy, supervision, and training.

Description

  • Manage a reduced caseload of Attorney for the Child appeals and Family Court matters.
  • Provide counsel and courtroom representation in juvenile delinquency, PINS, child protection, custody, visitation, termination of parental rights, foster care, adoption, and other assigned proceedings.
  • Prepare and review pleadings, motions, legal papers, and correspondence.
  • Interview clients directly or oversee interviews conducted by Attorney for the Child program staff.
  • Manage discovery and investigative activities.
  • File motions and notices of appeal, finalize orders and records, and represent clients in post-dispositional matters.
  • Confer and negotiate with opposing counsel, parties, social workers, and support personnel.
  • Advocate for clients at appearances, hearings, trials, and related proceedings.
  • Deliver high-quality legal services in accordance with applicable law and professional ethics.
  • Record complete, accurate, and detailed case contacts in Legal Server.
  • Research legal issues, track legislative and case-law developments, and participate in continuing legal education.
  • Support the Program Director with AFC Program leadership, recruitment, training, and performance management.
  • Coordinate case coverage and legal strategy among Staff Attorneys, the Program Director, and the Division Director.
  • Establish team expectations and priorities, track progress, hold individual meetings, and provide feedback.
  • Assign work, balance caseloads, mentor and coach staff, and build a collaborative, inclusive team environment.
  • Resolve team concerns and conflicts while partnering with managers and stakeholders on organizational priorities.
  • Support performance evaluation records and review or manage employee time-off requests.
  • Take part in Legal Aid Society meetings and office activities.
  • Provide legal assistance to other programs when needed.
  • Strengthen an inclusive workplace culture and advance the agency’s mission and values.
  • Help prepare recurring reports for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Travel to the Steuben County office in Bath, New York, may be required for supervision, training, or coverage.

Requirements

  • Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school.
  • Admission to and good standing with the New York State Bar.
  • At least five years of experience supervising attorneys or legal staff in a nonprofit or legal aid environment is preferred.
  • Substantial experience managing litigation, trials, court advocacy, and administrative hearings.
  • Experience reviewing and assigning cases and developing strategies for complex legal issues.
  • Experience creating and delivering training for attorneys and support staff is preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of applicable law, regulations, and case law, especially family law and juvenile justice.
  • Working proficiency with legal case-management software and Microsoft Office.
  • Outstanding legal writing ability, including clear, concise, well-supported pleadings, motions, and correspondence.
  • Effective courtroom advocacy and respectful oral communication with clients, colleagues, and external stakeholders.
  • Strong analytical and critical-thinking skills for evaluating complex legal matters and developing practical strategies.
  • Highly organized approach to managing multiple cases, deadlines, and supervisory duties.
  • Strong relationship-building skills, particularly when serving vulnerable or underserved clients.
  • Ability to collaborate across departments and with legal aid organizations, government agencies, and community partners.
  • Careful attention to detail in legal research, case preparation, and document review.
  • Commitment to social justice and serving underrepresented communities.
  • Ability to work throughout the office, travel to court and client locations, and reach other legal venues by walking or driving.
