Remote Crisis Counselor, Washington

Provide phone-based crisis intervention, suicide prevention, and brief counseling for Volunteers of America Western Washington. Assess clients, coordinate evaluations, and support regional crisis-line services.

Description

  • Provide crisis intervention, suicide prevention, and brief counseling to people experiencing emotional distress.
  • Assess clients according to regional and program policies.
  • Guide each interaction toward timely, effective support suited to the client’s needs.
  • Document client interactions accurately and efficiently.
  • Meet or exceed performance targets set by program goals.
  • Use current technology to engage with clients and community members.
  • Conduct assessments and consultations, and coordinate services.
  • Triage requests for in-person mental health evaluations and dispatch appropriate teams.
  • Attend staff meetings and local and regional training.
  • Mentor and coach new staff.
  • Provide backup coverage for other Regional Crisis Line and 988 programs as needed.
  • Help maintain a workplace grounded in integrity, respect, and accountability.
  • Take on other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in psychology, social work, or a related field.
  • At least one year of experience in a healthcare contact center or mental health counseling.
  • Agency Affiliated Counselor registration, or an equivalent credential, is required within 30 days of starting and must remain active throughout employment.
  • Pass a typing test at 35 words per minute or faster.
  • Fluent spoken and written English.
  • Proficiency in motivational interviewing and active listening.
  • Strong problem-solving and information-gathering skills.
  • Excellent communication skills for conveying information clearly and effectively.
  • Ability to multitask, including speaking and typing at the same time.
  • Efficient documentation skills in electronic medical records.
  • Home internet with at least 100 Mbps download and 10 Mbps upload speeds.
  • Provide a recent internet speed test result as proof.
  • A secure wired Ethernet connection is required; Wi-Fi is not accepted.
  • Satellite internet services, including HughesNet, Starlink, and Visat, are not supported.
