Description

  • Inspect installations, start up, and fully commission diesel and natural gas generator sets, generally ranging from 100 kW to 3 MW+.
  • Commission and functionally test automatic transfer switches, paralleling switchgear, and related control systems.
  • Perform sequence-of-operations checks, including utility-to-generator transfer scenarios.
  • Configure, program, and troubleshoot generator and switchgear controls with OEM platforms and laptop-based diagnostic software.
  • Run resistive and reactive load-bank tests, integrated systems tests, and witness tests with engineers, contractors, and owner representatives.
  • Confirm installations match drawings and specifications, including fuel, exhaust, cooling, and electrical interconnections.
  • Identify deficiencies and maintain accurate punch-list documentation.
  • Use one-line diagrams, wiring schematics, and control drawings to diagnose and correct field problems.
  • Install or repair enclosure accessories, battery chargers, remote annunciators, and monitoring equipment.
  • Prepare commissioning reports, test records, and turnover documentation.
  • Train customers on operating their newly commissioned systems.
  • Assist the service team with complex troubleshooting and warranty-related issues.
  • Apply LOTO, arc-flash, and NFPA 70E safety procedures.
  • Keep the company vehicle and tools clean, organized, and professionally maintained.

Requirements

  • At least three years of hands-on experience with power-generation equipment, including diesel or natural gas generators, automatic transfer switches, or paralleling switchgear.
  • Prior standby or prime-power start-up or commissioning experience is preferred; experienced field service technicians seeking commissioning work may also be considered.
  • Strong AC/DC electrical fundamentals, including three-phase power, basic protective relaying, and control logic.
  • Ability to interpret schematics and one-line diagrams.
  • Comfort using laptop-based diagnostic and configuration software.
  • Completion of an electrical, diesel, or power-generation technical program, or equivalent military training such as Army 91D or USMC 1142.
  • Valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
  • Availability for travel and extended hours during project cutovers.
  • Experience with generator OEMs and related controls or service software, including Caterpillar, Cummins, Kohler, Generac Industrial, or MTU/Rolls-Royce.
  • Experience with paralleling switchgear from ASCO, Russelectric, Eaton, or similar manufacturers, including utility-parallel or closed-transition systems.
  • Exposure to mission-critical facilities such as data centers or hospitals, including NFPA 110 testing.
  • NFPA 70E training, EGSA certification, or an electrical license.
