Staff Platform Engineer - Gravie Remote

Lead platform architecture and AWS foundations while building production AI systems for Gravie’s healthcare benefits platform. Shape distributed systems, developer pathways, and regulated decision-support capabilities.

Description

  • Create golden paths and paved roads through reference implementations, shared libraries, service templates, scaffolding, and pipeline templates
  • Track adoption of paved paths and time to first success, then improve the areas teams avoid
  • Deliver the first production workload in partnership with an operating team
  • Develop distributed-systems patterns spanning backend services, event-driven workers, job pipelines, APIs, and relational data models
  • Collaborate with Platform Engineering to build, roadmap, and transition shared infrastructure
  • Lead the migration and adoption of existing services onto new paths while retiring superseded systems
  • Take part in cross-team code reviews and production incident response
  • Define and maintain target-state architecture with accountable owners and decision dates
  • Own AWS foundations for platform and AI workloads, including accounts, identity, networks, isolation, runtimes, managed data services, tagging, and cost governance
  • Increase standards adoption through tooling and delivery pipelines
  • Guide buy, build, and reuse decisions for models, frameworks, and vendors
  • Unify overlapping tools and standards and manage their retirement plans
  • Create production-grade AI agent systems, multi-agent workflows, orchestration layers, and supporting services
  • Design retrieval, context, and memory systems with sensitive-data scoping, redaction, and auditability
  • Develop AI decision-support systems that satisfy healthcare and regulated-environment expectations for accuracy, traceability, and explainability
  • Build React and TypeScript user experiences for AI capabilities
  • Define AI quality-assurance practices covering automated evaluations, regression testing, groundedness checks, and compliance safeguards
  • Create a consistent operating model for building, running, evaluating, and managing AI systems
  • Connect teams, expose duplicated work, assign unowned decisions, and coordinate cross-team efforts
  • Communicate through clear writing, demonstrations, and working sessions
  • Support roadmap development and capacity planning
  • Coordinate collaboration across Engineering, Product, Data, Security, and Infrastructure
  • Explain technical direction to leadership and bring business context back to engineering
  • Work with Product to turn ambiguous business needs into architecture
  • Elevate engineering standards through design reviews, mentorship, and decision records
  • Collaborate with Security, Compliance, and Data on AI governance, access controls, and data handling

Requirements

  • At least eight years of software engineering experience, with architectural ownership, organization-wide scope, and responsibility for complex systems from design through production
  • Current hands-on experience writing code and conducting code reviews
  • Experience creating internal platform capabilities that other teams adopt voluntarily
  • Production experience with AI applications, including evaluation, monitoring, failure handling, guardrails, latency, and cost management
  • Advanced AWS expertise across multi-account organizations, identity and permission boundaries, networking, compute and serverless runtimes, managed data and model services, and cost and tagging governance
  • Infrastructure-as-code experience with Terraform, CDK, or both
  • A record of establishing architectural foundations and standards and driving their adoption
  • Hands-on experience developing agentic software with AI coding agents
  • Deep expertise in Python or JVM backend and distributed systems, or in React and TypeScript product engineering
  • Ability to contribute across the full technology stack
  • Experience with retrieval, embeddings, context, memory, evaluation, monitoring, or AI agent architectures and workflows
  • Sound judgment around testing, monitoring, failure handling, privacy, security, access control, and data governance in regulated or audited environments
  • Experience partnering with platform or infrastructure teams to deliver organization-wide change
  • Experience acting as a central technical resource across multiple teams without becoming an approval bottleneck
  • Ability to align teams with differing views and contribute to roadmap and capacity planning
  • Clear written communication and effective collaboration with technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • United States work authorization is required; the application asks about visa sponsorship
  • Preferred: experience in healthcare, health insurance, or benefits administration, including ICHRA, claims, eligibility and enrollment, EDI, or FHIR
  • Preferred: experience at a venture-backed, high-growth company
  • Preferred: experience with internal developer platforms or developer experience
  • Preferred: GitLab CI experience at scale
