BLUE ORIGIN
BLUE ORIGIN
BLUE ORIGIN is an aerospace and defense company focused on space exploration and the development of reusable launch vehicles. Founded by Jeff Bezos, the company aims to expand human activity into space while helping preserve Earth by pursuing new energy and material resources and relocating industries beyond the planet. Its partially and fully reusable systems are designed for civil, commercial, and defense customers, with an emphasis on safety and cost-effective access to space.

Senior PCB Layout Engineer – Blue Origin

Design advanced RF, digital, mixed-signal, and high-power circuit boards for Blue Origin’s TeraWave satellite communications network. The role focuses on signal integrity, manufacturability, and qualification for space environments.

Description

  • Design multilayer PCBs for mmWave and microwave RF, complex digital, mixed-signal, and high-power systems, including FPGA- and microcontroller-based designs.
  • Create digital, analog, and RF layouts with controlled impedance, appropriate loss tangent, and electromagnetic compatibility in mind.
  • Analyze signal integrity for PCIe, DDR, and Ethernet interfaces.
  • Build component libraries, define design-rule checks, and maintain PCB design standards.
  • Partner with electrical engineers on component selection, schematic reviews, and layout optimization.
  • Prepare fabrication and assembly deliverables, including Gerber files, drill files, and assembly drawings.
  • Coordinate with PCB fabricators and contract manufacturers to support manufacturability and resolve production issues.
  • Support board bring-up and troubleshoot hardware problems associated with PCB design.
  • Account for thermal management, radiation tolerance, and mechanical stress in space-environment designs.
  • Evaluate PCB stackup feasibility and trace routability.
  • Perform design-rule studies with PCB fabrication houses.
  • Lead the PCB OK2FAB process through DRC review, design release, and fabrication drawing preparation.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or a related field, plus at least five years of PCB design experience.
  • Proficiency with PCB design software such as Altium Designer, Cadence Allegro, or comparable tools.
  • Strong command of signal integrity principles for high-speed digital systems, including transmission lines, termination, and crosstalk.
  • Experience designing higher-layer-count HDI boards with dense fanout and routing.
  • Experience with controlled-impedance design and PCB stackup optimization.
  • Experience designing high-voltage layouts with appropriate creepage, clearance, and thermal management.
  • Knowledge of EMI/EMC design practices and guidelines.
  • Familiarity with IPC-2221, IPC-6012, and IPC-A-610 standards.
  • Experience laying out PCBs for FPGAs, high-speed ADCs/DACs, or mixed-signal systems.
  • Export-control eligibility as a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident, or lawfully admitted U.S. refugee or asylee.
  • Successful completion of a standard background check.

Benefits

  • Medical, dental, and vision coverage.
  • Basic and supplemental life insurance.
  • Paid parental leave.
  • Short- and long-term disability coverage.
  • 401(k) plan with company matching contributions of up to 5%.
  • Education Support Program.
  • Stock options for regular employees working at least 20 hours per week.
  • Up to four weeks of paid time off annually, based on scheduled weekly hours.
  • Up to 14 company-paid holidays.
  • Additional benefits and bonuses may vary by role type, job level, individual contributions, company performance, or other factors at the company’s discretion.
