Remote 988 Text and Chat Crisis Counselor
Provide remote text and chat crisis support through CarePoint Response’s nonprofit 988 system. Assess risk, intervene in crises, connect people with resources, and document interactions confidentially.
Description
- Answer incoming text and chat messages on the 988 Lifeline platform in a timely manner
- Use active listening, empathy, and evidence-based techniques to support people in crisis
- Assess suicide risk and refer high-risk situations to supervisors or emergency services when needed
- Apply professional boundaries, cultural humility, and trauma-informed care
- Connect people with local mental health services, shelters, substance use treatment, and other resources
- Record interactions accurately and promptly in electronic systems, following agency and legal requirements
- Take part in regular supervision, debriefings, and training
- Protect confidentiality and comply with HIPAA and 988 Lifeline standards
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent
- An associate or bachelor’s degree in psychology, social work, counseling, or a related field is preferred
- Strong typing ability
- Strong written communication
- Crisis de-escalation ability
- Ability to work comfortably with diverse groups, including LGBTQIA+ people, youth, and people experiencing mental health or substance-related crises
- Bilingual or multilingual ability is preferred
- Reliable internet access and a private, quiet workspace
- Compliance with HIPAA and confidentiality requirements
- Availability for variable shifts: 7:00 AM–3:00 PM or 3:00 PM–11:00 PM, Tuesday–Saturday or Sunday–Thursday
