Staff Cloud Architect (L4) – Remote in Canada

Lead cloud, data, and AI/ML architecture for applied AI engineering engagements at Robots & Pencils. Build secure, scalable production systems while working with remote teams across Canada and the United States.

Description

  • Set technical strategy and lead architecture for cloud, data, and AI/ML systems across complete client engagements
  • Create scalable cloud-native architectures spanning multi-cloud and hybrid environments
  • Design data platforms covering warehouses, lakes, and batch and streaming pipelines
  • Architect production AI/ML platforms, including model serving, MLOps, feature stores, and LLM applications
  • Set standards for infrastructure as code, CI/CD, and DevOps practices
  • Optimize systems for performance, scalability, cost efficiency, and reliability
  • Ensure solutions satisfy security, governance, and compliance obligations
  • Lead cloud migration and platform modernization programs
  • Apply AI-focused tools such as Claude and Cursor to deliver high-quality work efficiently
  • Work with leadership and clients to set technical direction and convert business objectives into architecture decisions
  • Explain complex technical concepts clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Coordinate with engineering, data, AI, and product teams
  • Create and maintain architecture documentation, standards, and guidance
  • Define and promote architecture best practices
  • Coach junior and mid-level engineers
  • Serve as the technical escalation point for complex architecture and integration issues
  • Assess emerging technologies and recommend suitable tools, frameworks, and patterns

Requirements

  • At least eight years in software engineering, including three or more years in architecture or technical leadership
  • Advanced knowledge of cloud platforms and cloud-native design across AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud
  • Strong experience with microservices, serverless systems, containers, and event-driven architectures, including Kubernetes, Docker, Lambda, and EventBridge
  • Proficiency in infrastructure as code and CI/CD tools such as Terraform, CloudFormation, Pulumi, and GitHub Actions
  • Extensive data architecture experience across relational, NoSQL, and big data technologies, including PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Snowflake, BigQuery, Spark, and Kafka
  • Practical experience with data modeling, ETL/ELT pipelines, and orchestration tools including Airflow, Prefect, and dbt
  • Strong background designing production AI/ML systems involving LLMs, MLOps, and model serving
  • Sound knowledge of cloud networking, security, identity, and access management
  • Experience with governance, compliance, and observability frameworks
  • Strong software development skills in Python, API design, and containerization
  • Proven record of technical leadership and mentoring
  • Excellent stakeholder communication skills, with the ability to explain technical detail to varied audiences
  • Demonstrated use of AI-focused tools such as Claude and Cursor
  • Multi-cloud architecture, responsible AI or AI ethics, and enterprise architecture certifications are advantageous
  • Candidates must be based in Canada or the United States; applications from elsewhere will not be considered
