Senior Data Scientist – Data Catalog and Metadata Governance at GDIT

Data Scientist supporting GDIT’s NASA programs by cataloging and governing portfolio data. Establishes metadata standards, lineage, and enterprise data catalog adoption.

Description

  • Support GDIT’s NASA programs
  • Create clear, consistent, searchable records for portfolio datasets
  • Develop and maintain taxonomies, controlled vocabularies, a shared business glossary, metadata standards, and documentation practices
  • Establish cataloging and metadata standards and hold the data team accountable for following them
  • Help analysts, engineers, and program staff locate, interpret, and evaluate data provenance and limitations
  • Onboard new datasets and retire outdated ones
  • Record provenance and ownership, apply sensitivity and controlled (CUI) classifications, and identify data-quality issues
  • Trace end-to-end data lineage across sources, systems, owners, flows, transformations, and downstream consumers
  • Assess, implement, and integrate an enterprise data catalog such as DataHub, Atlan, Collibra, Alation, or Microsoft Purview
  • Define the metadata model and connect the catalog to portfolio data sources
  • Maintain catalog integration with the Dagster data orchestration tool
  • Establish and monitor metadata completeness, documentation, and freshness metrics
  • Increase catalog adoption across the portfolio and act as the contact for data discovery, description, and use

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Library and Information Science (MLIS/MLS) focused on data curation, research data management, or informatics, or a related information or data degree with demonstrated cataloging and metadata experience
  • U.S. citizenship and the ability to obtain the required agency clearance
  • At least five years of experience in data librarianship, research data services, data curation, metadata, or catalog roles
  • Practical experience operating a data catalog or metadata management platform, including DataHub, Atlan, Collibra, Alation, Informatica, Microsoft Purview, or Amundsen, or equivalent experience managing a metadata repository or catalog
  • Understanding of data-team processes, including pipelines, data flows, and how data is produced and used, to accurately capture lineage and metadata
  • Strong knowledge of metadata standards, taxonomies, controlled vocabularies, and data dictionaries
  • Proven ability to promote adoption of a catalog, standard, or shared data practice across multiple teams
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to bridge technical and program audiences
  • Working knowledge of data engineering, including pipelines and orchestration, warehouses and lakes, and transformation workflows
  • Working knowledge of data science practices, including sourcing, preparing, and using data for analysis and modeling
