Revenue Examiner (Onsite) - Birmingham, Alabama

Inspect businesses, process licenses, and collect taxes for Jefferson County-area agencies. Conduct administrative reviews and field visits to support compliance with revenue laws.

Description

  • Enforce applicable city, county, and state revenue laws within assigned jurisdictions
  • Inspect businesses and residences to establish classifications, tax liabilities, licensing needs, and other revenue information
  • Process business operation applications, including business licenses and special event permits
  • Collect occupation, liquor, ad valorem, lease, lodging, and other applicable taxes
  • Conduct residential and commercial revenue inspections through site visits, financial and tax-record reviews, and citation issuance
  • Receive and evaluate tax, revenue, license, bond, and related application documents
  • Coordinate with department leaders, employees, residents, board and council members, vendors, and other stakeholders
  • Administer departmental receivables and payables, monitor spending, and prepare financial reports with financial software
  • Create and maintain files, organize records, and track information through forms and computer systems
  • Deliver customer service to internal and external stakeholders
  • Pursue professional development and remain informed about applicable practices, regulations, laws, policies, and guidelines

Requirements

  • Hold a valid driver's license
  • Use Microsoft Office or comparable productivity software, including spreadsheets, word processing, and email
  • Bring financial experience involving cash balancing, money orders, tax calculations, overdue payment collection, and preliminary and final assessments for business licenses and permits
  • Have customer service experience handling in-person or telephone complaints, researching information, and providing guidance
  • Maintain the capacity for light physical activity, including walking and standing
  • Occasionally lift items weighing up to 50 pounds
  • Walk across unstable surfaces such as loose ground at construction sites
