Senior Publication Ethics Editor – PLOS (Remote)

Investigate research integrity and publication ethics cases for PLOS open-access journals. Support editorial teams, policy development, and ethical standards across scientific publishing.

Description

  • Investigate and resolve publication ethics cases across PLOS journals
  • Handle cases efficiently according to PLOS standards and COPE guidance
  • Provide prompt support for colleagues managing publication ethics cases
  • Manage escalations and respond to publication ethics questions
  • Support team casework through related tasks, documentation, and processes
  • Contribute to team-wide and cross-functional ethics and integrity initiatives
  • Create and update workflows and policies
  • Design, test, and implement methods to improve the detection, prevention, and resolution of publication ethics cases
  • Advise journal staff editors on ethics matters during manuscript handling, peer review, and post-publication
  • Communicate with journal editorial leads, Editorial Board members, authors, PLOS teams, and other stakeholders
  • Take part in internal discussions on publication ethics and research integrity
  • Track industry-wide issues and initiatives and attend COPE Forums during working hours
  • Assist with recruiting and onboarding team members
  • Train staff in publication ethics case management and applicable standards
  • Provide training and feedback to Publication Ethics team colleagues
  • Maintain professional standards in internal and external communications

Requirements

  • Candidates must be based in the UK or in FL, IL, MA, MD, NY, PA, TX, or VA
  • Master’s degree or PhD, or equivalent qualification, in a scientific discipline
  • Professional experience in editorial or publication ethics work within science, technical, and medical publishing
  • Direct experience investigating and resolving publication ethics cases in STM publishing
  • Strong ability to critically assess scientific articles or publication ethics concerns
  • Excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills
  • Highly organized, efficient, self-directed, and attentive to detail
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities
  • Working knowledge of peer review, publishing, editorial decision-making, and publication ethics standards
  • Previous experience investigating and resolving publication ethics cases
  • Knowledge of Committee on Publication Ethics standards and guidance
  • Commitment to open access and research integrity
  • Ability to collaborate effectively within a remote team
  • Willingness to work with some flexibility across time zones
  • Preferred: expertise in image forensics and experience delivering training
  • Preferred: postgraduate research experience in a scientific, clinical, or social sciences field
