Senior Backend Software Engineer (Hybrid, New Zealand)
Lead the development of scalable backend services for a global fintech’s cross-border payments infrastructure. Shape architecture, improve reliability, modernize platforms, and mentor engineers.
Description
- Own backend services across payments, multi-currency accounts, onboarding, compliance, settlement, and related financial products
- Take new platform capabilities from initial problem definition through production release
- Develop and support partner integrations and settlement systems
- Maintain production reliability through observability, incident response, on-call support, and operational ownership
- Work closely with Product, Compliance, Operations, Architecture, and Engineering stakeholders
- Facilitate technical design reviews, make architectural decisions, and promote strong engineering standards
- Coach mid-level engineers through technical guidance and knowledge sharing
- Lead platform modernization, including transitions from legacy technology to cloud-native architectures
- Promote AI-assisted development tools and practices across the software delivery lifecycle
Requirements
- Bring 6 to 10+ years of experience building and running production-grade backend services end to end
- Have strong backend development experience, ideally with C#/.NET; experience with Java, Kotlin, Go, or another object-oriented language is also welcomed
- Understand SQL and relational database technologies well
- Create, maintain, and run automated tests throughout the software delivery lifecycle
- Have practical experience with AI-assisted development platforms such as GitHub Copilot, Cursor, Claude Code, or comparable tools
- Bring substantial AWS, CI/CD, and modern deployment experience, including SQS, DynamoDB, S3, ECS, and Lambda
- Understand software architecture, system design, microservices, service-oriented architecture, and event-driven systems deeply
- Have worked in payments, foreign exchange, fintech, or another regulated sector
- Demonstrate technical leadership through mentoring, design reviews, and architectural decision-making
- Communicate clearly in writing and conversation
- Understand financial platforms involving ledgers, double-entry accounting, or transaction processing
- Have participated in technical hiring, interviews, or onboarding
- Have led platform modernization or migration programs
- Have experience with Redis, Memcached, or similar caching systems
- Be familiar with Jira and Confluence
- Have used API testing tools such as Postman or Bruno
- Have applied AI tools to automated testing and software quality engineering
