Senior Backend Software Engineer – Christchurch Hybrid
Lead backend engineering for scalable cross-border payment infrastructure at a global fintech. Own APIs, services, reliability, modernization, and technical direction.
Description
- Design and own backend services for payments, multi-currency balances, onboarding, compliance, settlement, and related financial products
- Deliver new platform capabilities from initial problem definition through production release
- Develop and maintain partner integrations and settlement systems
- Take responsibility for production health through observability, reliability engineering, incident response, and on-call support
- Work closely with Product, Compliance, Operations, Architecture, and Engineering stakeholders
- Guide technical design reviews, document architecture decisions, and promote strong engineering practices
- Mentor mid-level engineers through technical guidance and knowledge sharing
- Lead modernization work, including migrations from legacy platforms to cloud-native architectures
- Promote AI-assisted development tools and practices across the software delivery lifecycle
- Partner with engineering teams operating across multiple global regions
Requirements
- Bring 6 to 10 or more years of experience building and operating production-ready backend services end to end
- Have strong backend development experience, preferably with C# and .NET; experience with Java, Kotlin, Go, or another object-oriented language is also welcomed
- Understand SQL and relational database technologies well
- Have experience creating, maintaining, and running automated tests throughout the software delivery lifecycle
- Have hands-on experience with AI-assisted development tools such as GitHub Copilot, Cursor, Claude Code, or comparable platforms
- Bring substantial experience with AWS, CI/CD pipelines, and modern deployment practices, including SQS, DynamoDB, S3, ECS, and Lambda
- Understand software architecture, system design, microservices, service-oriented architecture, and event-driven systems deeply
- Have experience in payments, foreign exchange, fintech, or another regulated industry
- Demonstrate technical leadership through mentoring, design reviews, and architecture decisions
- Communicate clearly in writing and conversation
- Have experience with financial systems such as ledgers, double-entry accounting, or transaction platforms
- Have participated in hiring, interviewing, or onboarding technical staff
- Have led platform modernization or migration programs
- Have experience with caching systems such as Redis or Memcached
- Be familiar with Jira and Confluence
- Have used API testing tools such as Postman or Bruno
- Have used AI tools for automated testing and software quality engineering
- Candidates based outside Christchurch must be willing to travel to the Christchurch office when required
