Postdoctoral Research Associate, Experimental Nuclear Physics

Conduct experimental nuclear physics research using triton-beam sources and two-neutron transfer measurements. Support low-energy nuclear physics programs at the University of Tennessee and Florida State University.

Description

  • Manage daily operations of the multi-cathode sputtering source for University of Tennessee researchers and other laboratory users.
  • Contribute to Florida State University experimental campaigns that use the sputtering source.
  • Direct two-neutron transfer studies involving light lithium and beryllium isotopes.
  • Apply contemporary analysis methods and machine learning to nuclear reaction data.
  • Work with theorists at UT Knoxville and partner institutions to interpret nuclear reaction properties.
  • Partner with researchers and students to apply advanced data-analysis techniques.
  • Follow environmental, safety, health, and quality program requirements.
  • Maintain high standards of integrity and ethical conduct in scientific research.

Requirements

  • PhD in experimental nuclear physics or a closely related discipline, such as nuclear engineering, completed by October 2026.
  • Demonstrated record of creative, productive research through peer-reviewed publications.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Capacity to work independently and collaboratively with team members and experimental partners.
  • Experience with nuclear reaction experiments and data analysis.
  • Knowledge of ion-source operation.
  • Proficiency with CERN ROOT for data analysis.
  • Authorization to work full-time in the United States without current or future employment-based visa sponsorship.
  • Preferred: experience with one-nucleon transfer experiments.
  • Preferred: familiarity with machine-learning coding interfaces.
  • Preferred: experience with nuclear reaction codes including FRESCO or TALYS.
  • Preferred: experience with Monte Carlo radiation-transport tools such as MCNP or GEANT4.
