Loan Collection and Recovery Counselor

Recover charged-off consumer, credit card, and mortgage accounts for Navy Federal Credit Union. Negotiate repayments, manage collections, and support legal recovery proceedings.

Description

  • Assess automated collection records to determine recovery steps.
  • Identify causes of missed payments and arrange fair repayment plans with borrowers and co-signers.
  • Advise borrowers and co-signers on their financial affairs.
  • Negotiate repayment plans.
  • Correspond with borrowers and prepare information for collection letters.
  • Follow up on missed payment commitments.
  • Locate borrower assets and engage attorneys to secure court judgments and recover debts.
  • Track legal accounts and maintain lists of collection attorneys.
  • Recommend collateral repossession, title release, and lien release.
  • Approve fund seizures and settlements within delegated limits, or recommend alternatives to management.
  • Keep chronological records and update automated collection systems.
  • Resolve credit bureau disputes and assign accounts to or recall them from collection agencies.
  • Review payments and calculate finance charges, collection costs, attorney fees, and balance waivers.
  • Help branches balance collection systems and general ledgers for charged-off accounts.
  • Monitor federal and state regulations and Department of Defense directives.
  • Identify trends in charged-off loans and recommend changes to lending policies and operations.
  • Serve as Custodian of the Records, sign affidavits, and testify in courts across the United States.
  • Perform other assigned duties.

Requirements

  • Substantial experience collecting delinquent loans.
  • Ability to independently apply credit and collection principles to recover charged-off loans, including through enforced collection.
  • Ability to read, understand, and analyze written material quickly.
  • Assertiveness, self-confidence, and initiative.
  • Ability to handle difficult situations with tact and effectiveness.
  • Thorough knowledge of credit and collection laws.
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Computer skills, including familiarity with word processing and spreadsheet software.
  • Availability Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Central Time.
  • Thorough knowledge of Navy Federal policies, practices, and procedures is preferred.
  • Familiarity with Navy Federal automated collection systems is preferred.
