Lead DevOps Engineer – Gloucester, UK

Lead secure DevOps automation, CI/CD, and cloud infrastructure for Leonardo’s UK aerospace, defence, and security programmes. Guide technical strategy, mentor engineers, and support complex customer solutions.

Description

  • Serve as the DevOps technical authority across programmes, shaping architectures and directing technical delivery
  • Set DevOps roadmaps and advance innovation in automation and secure software delivery
  • Lead feasibility studies, technology evaluations, and solution recommendations for complex engineering challenges
  • Provide expert guidance on CI/CD, infrastructure as code, and container orchestration across environments
  • Mentor Principal, Senior, and early-career engineers to strengthen the wider DevOps community
  • Represent Leonardo in customer reviews, technical boards, and industry events, presenting and defending proposed solutions
  • Provide specialist input to bids, proposals, and technical strategy
  • Promote secure-by-design practices, accreditation alignment, and engineering governance
  • Address customer challenges through agile, innovative, and collaborative engineering

Requirements

  • Demonstrated expertise as a DevOps and automation technical authority
  • Ability to shape technical strategy and represent Leonardo externally as a subject matter expert
  • Strong communication skills for working with engineers, stakeholders, and senior leaders
  • Expertise in CI/CD pipelines, automation, and orchestration tools
  • Advanced containerisation and orchestration experience, including Docker, Kubernetes, and OpenShift or Tanzu
  • Deep knowledge of AWS, Azure, and hybrid cloud environments
  • Experience integrating cybersecurity controls and DevSecOps practices into pipelines and infrastructure
  • Proficiency in Python, Bash, and PowerShell scripting and automation
  • Familiarity with accreditation, assurance, and governance requirements for secure environments
  • Relevant expert certifications, such as Kubernetes CKA or CKAD, AWS or Azure Architect, or HashiCorp Terraform or Vault certifications, are desirable
  • Experience shaping organisational DevOps standards and best practices is desirable
  • Contributions to DevOps or automation research, publications, or professional forums are desirable
  • Knowledge of service mesh, GitOps, and policy-as-code approaches is desirable
  • Experience with monitoring, logging, and observability platforms such as ELK, Prometheus, and Splunk is desirable
  • Existing UK Security Clearance at DV level is advantageous; candidates eligible to obtain clearance are encouraged to apply
  • Willingness to complete pre-employment screening in line with the UK Government’s Baseline Personnel Security Standard
  • Additional National Security Vetting may apply, including eligibility requirements for SC or DV clearance
  • Willingness to learn and a positive attitude
