AI/ML Cloud Software Engineer – Adelaide Hybrid

Build secure AI/ML platforms and cloud automation for Services Australia. The role covers compliant infrastructure, platform engineering, and software delivery for government services.

Description

  • Deliver complex application development initiatives within Services Australia’s Technology and Digital Program Group
  • Build, implement, and optimise public-cloud platform tooling for both new and established environments
  • Use secure-by-design architecture, reusable patterns, and Infrastructure as Code to create scalable, compliant solutions
  • Partner with Data Science, Architecture, Cyber Security, and Core Data teams to establish platform capabilities and frameworks
  • Apply governance requirements and sound practices to networking and resource management
  • Work with substantial independence while sustaining stakeholder relationships and following agency processes
  • Champion innovation, lead change, and support the agency’s strategic direction
  • Prepare, explain, present, and influence outcomes and findings across relevant forums
  • Produce software and technical designs for complex development solutions
  • Write high-quality code and support product codebases throughout their lifecycle
  • Offer technical guidance on software development and ongoing maintenance
  • Support complex releases through go-live and subsequent maintenance
  • Conduct analysis, design, development, prototyping, unit testing, and maintenance activities
  • Assess technical requirements to inform project evaluation and proposed solutions
  • Follow approved software development methodologies and compliance requirements
  • Investigate, diagnose, and resolve complex ICT issues
  • Evaluate, communicate, monitor, and manage risk
  • Set team plans and objectives, and prepare draft reports and corporate documentation
  • Organise and prioritise workloads against business objectives and deadlines
  • Deliver projects within the assigned area of responsibility
  • Carry out cost analysis when required
  • Uphold APS Values and the Code of Conduct, using delegated authority in line with legislation and guidelines

Requirements

  • Hold an active Baseline security clearance
  • Bring at least five years of hands-on AI engineering experience
  • Have designed, implemented, and operated greenfield and brownfield AI/ML environments across on-premises, public-cloud, and hybrid platforms
  • Demonstrate Kubernetes experience spanning namespaces, RBAC, operators, CRDs, deployments, services, ingress or routes, secrets, ConfigMaps, workbenches, custom images, AI Pipelines or Kubeflow, model registries and catalogues, model serving, distributed workloads, and monitoring
  • Understand container and platform engineering, including Docker or Podman, image creation, registries, image scanning, vulnerability management, container security, and secure software supply-chain practices
  • Have experience administering Linux, networking, and storage, including DNS, TLS, proxies, load balancing, ingress, firewall concepts, certificates, scripting, and on-premises or cloud connectivity
  • Have worked with DevOps, CI/CD, and Infrastructure as Code using tools such as Git, GitLab, GitHub, Azure DevOps, Tekton, GitOps or Argo CD, Terraform, and Ansible, including automated build, test, and deployment pipelines
  • Use Python and scripting for automation, AI/ML integration, APIs, platform tooling, and operational support
  • Understand AI/ML engineering and MLOps across model training, inference, evaluation, registration, deployment, monitoring, optimisation, lifecycle management, and automated build-and-release processes
  • Have worked with LLM and generative-AI technologies such as vLLM, TGI or equivalent, Hugging Face, LLM APIs, embeddings, Retrieval-Augmented Generation, vector databases, prompt and evaluation tools, AI agents, and foundation models
  • Understand APIs and enterprise integration, including REST, authentication, OAuth or OIDC, API gateways, service-to-service integration, streaming platforms, data lakes, and feature stores
  • Have practical experience with AWS or Azure, preferably both, including exposure to SageMaker or Azure AI/ML
  • Understand object storage and data management for pipelines, models, and datasets
  • Have used observability and operational-monitoring tools, including AWS CloudWatch or Azure Application Insights, logs, metrics, tracing, and model or application monitoring
  • Understand security, governance, and compliance practices including RBAC, secrets, certificates, network policies, vulnerability scanning, DevSecOps, data sovereignty, security classifications, privacy obligations, and Australian Government regulatory requirements
  • Have applied FinOps practices to cloud and AI workloads
  • Apply architecture principles and enterprise technologies to turn complex technical requirements into scalable, sustainable, supportable solutions
  • Clearly explain complex technical concepts, facilitate stakeholder discussions, and build consensus
  • Meet SFIA Level 4 capability in methods and tools, programming or software development, release and deployment, software configuration, systems design, and systems integration and build
  • Meet SFIA Level 3 capability in software design and testing
  • Submit responses to essential and desirable criteria, with each response limited to 5000 characters, and provide an updated CV of no more than 3–5 pages.
