Staff Software Engineer, Web Application Services — Remote United States

Lead architecture and development for scalable web services supporting Thunderbird’s privacy-focused email ecosystem. Guide product direction, analytics, technical strategy, and engineering practices.

Description

  • Direct the technical architecture for new Services products
  • Lead complex initiatives and strengthen systems through targeted improvements
  • Develop software, prototypes, and experiments across planning, testing, implementation, monitoring, and maintenance
  • Define software patterns and evaluate technology options for technical decisions
  • Build analytics and infrastructure that use user-generated data to guide decisions
  • Address ambiguous, high-impact challenges tied to Services objectives, including user and subscriber growth
  • Set technical and product direction across Thunderbird while collaborating with Mozilla and community contributors
  • Partner with colleagues and the community to identify issues, improve ideas, and create practical solutions
  • Design system and process enhancements that improve accessibility, self-service, efficiency, sustainability, scalability, and delegation
  • Support engineers through code reviews, documentation, technical discussions, process improvements, and ongoing mentorship
  • Keep current with relevant technologies, coding standards, libraries, and frameworks
  • Collaborate with leadership and cross-functional teams on data-informed product decisions and growth

Requirements

  • At least 10 years of web software development experience, including designing scalable systems and launching complex web projects at scale
  • Expert JavaScript proficiency plus expertise in at least one additional language, such as Python, Rust, Go, or C++
  • Understanding of the business context and experience working with teams to grow Thunderbird’s user and donor base
  • Background in front-end frameworks, full-stack engineering, and/or API development
  • Strong command of software engineering practices, including testing, code review, and documentation
  • Experience serving as a technical lead, resolving complex engineering problems, and mentoring engineers
  • Experience working remotely with engineering, product management, QA, and design teams
  • Excellent written and verbal English communication and documentation skills
  • Comfort working in open source and alignment with Mozilla values
  • Ability to assess, learn, and use emerging technologies responsibly, including AI-enabled tools
  • Commitment to ongoing learning and keeping pace with industry developments and technologies
  • Willingness and ability to travel periodically, including internationally
  • Permanent work authorization in the applicable country; visa sponsorship is unavailable
