Staff Software Engineer, AI/ML Platform — Walmart, Sunnyvale Onsite

Build Walmart Marketplace’s machine learning trust infrastructure, including model serving, governance, observability, and cloud-native platform systems. Lead scalable, production-ready capabilities across the AI/ML lifecycle.

Description

  • Lead the development and delivery of scalable platform capabilities spanning infrastructure, tooling, and AI/ML frameworks
  • Deliver platform capabilities against roadmap milestones and domain priorities
  • Own coding, testing, deployment, monitoring, and maintenance throughout the software development lifecycle
  • Apply cloud-native architecture principles to create scalable, resilient, and adaptable systems
  • Review system designs and maintain alignment with architectural best practices
  • Build AI-powered applications and integrate machine learning components across multiple programming languages
  • Mentor engineers, guide technical decisions, and advance standardization and sustainable engineering practices
  • Partner with stakeholders to turn complex challenges into clear, actionable technical requirements
  • Define success metrics with data-driven methods and improve development processes
  • Advance continuous improvement through innovation, defect resolution, and knowledge sharing
  • Develop and operate AI/ML infrastructure for model onboarding, automated deployment, inference, monitoring, drift detection, and governance
  • Work with Product, Compliance, and Platform Engineering to deliver reliable, production-grade, auditable solutions

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, computer engineering, computer information systems, software engineering, or a related field plus four years of software engineering or related experience; alternatively, six years of software engineering or related experience
  • Experience delivering production ML platform capabilities, such as model serving, MLOps pipelines, monitoring frameworks, or equivalent systems
  • Expertise in distributed systems architecture, including event-driven design, Kafka, microservices, API design, and cloud-native infrastructure
  • Strong Java and/or Python programming skills with the ability to produce production-quality code
  • Experience with MLflow, Vertex AI, or comparable model registry and lifecycle tools
  • Hands-on experience with Spark, BigQuery, or large-scale data pipeline engineering
  • Experience developing observability infrastructure using OpenTelemetry, Prometheus, Grafana, and distributed tracing
  • Familiarity with real-time data processing patterns
