Lead C&I Engineer – GBE-N and CEZ, Derby Hybrid

Lead the design and integration of safety-critical control and instrumentation systems for Rolls-Royce SMR nuclear power plants. Support programmes across the UK and Czech Republic.

Description

  • Provide technical leadership throughout the design and development lifecycle of control and instrumentation systems for the SMR nuclear power plant
  • Create system architectures, subsystem designs, component specifications, equipment selections, and integration solutions
  • Convert high-level requirements into detailed control and instrumentation system specifications
  • Collaborate with C&I Functional Architects on system designs and implementation requirements
  • Coordinate with process, mechanical, systems engineering, and other disciplines to integrate required functionality and performance
  • Evaluate and substantiate C&I designs against technical and regulatory requirements
  • Maintain compliance with IEC 61513, IEC 61226, IEC 61508, and related standards
  • Develop verification and validation strategies and define testing programmes to demonstrate requirement fulfilment
  • Help maintain C&I system lifecycle policies and procedures
  • Support procurement, operational, and maintenance requirements for C&I equipment
  • Contribute to safety case preparation and participate in discussions with regulators
  • Serve as the responsible designer or intelligent customer according to the assignment
  • Deliver agreed work programmes and manage contract partners where required
  • Mentor developing engineers and provide technical leadership across the discipline

Requirements

  • A degree in electrical engineering, electronics, instrumentation, control systems, or mechatronics, or equivalent experience
  • A strong track record designing and implementing C&I systems in a highly regulated environment
  • Nuclear experience is preferred; relevant backgrounds may include Defence, Aerospace, Rail, Automotive, or Oil & Gas
  • Knowledge of system and component qualification
  • Experience applying systems engineering methods, managing requirements, and integrating systems
  • Experience conducting design safety assessments and assurance activities
  • Experience designing hardwired or programmable protection systems
  • Experience in analogue electronics design and FPGA development
  • Experience with industrial process control and automation systems
  • Experience with C&I instrumentation
  • Experience using DCS, SCADA, PLC, or FPGA-based platforms
  • Experience integrating C&I plant equipment, including panels, junction boxes, installation, and wiring design
  • Experience managing cable design from specification and routing through termination, installation, commissioning, and testing
  • Experience with environmental qualification, including EMI/RFI, DSEAR, ATEX, and related performance standards
  • Extensive lifecycle experience with safety-critical or process-critical C&I systems
  • A strong understanding of fault-tolerant design using redundancy and diversity
  • Practical expertise with IEC 61513, IEC 61226, IEC 61508, and related standards
  • Strong communication skills, including the ability to explain complex information clearly to regulators
  • Experience providing technical oversight and fulfilling the intelligent customer role
  • Ability to obtain BPSS clearance
  • Successful completion of a DBS check and basic financial probity check is required
