Fastening Design and Release Engineer

Design and validate mechanical fasteners and bolted joints for General Motors vehicles in a hybrid engineering role. Help deliver fastening systems that are robust, manufacturable, safe, and cost-effective.

Description

  • Design and analyze threaded and non-threaded joints for vehicle components and systems
  • Select fasteners using catalogs, engineering standards, and part-classification tools
  • Perform joint calculations covering clamp load, torque, slip, thread engagement, and strength
  • Develop and maintain fastener tightening specifications
  • Contribute to design reviews focused on accessibility, serviceability, and manufacturing feasibility
  • Work with Manufacturing, Plant, Tooling, and Equipment Engineering to implement fastening processes
  • Support torque-tension tests, joint audits, and plant torque-correlation studies
  • Record lessons learned and help maintain fastening standards, guidelines, and checklists
  • Investigate fastener failures, loosening, warranty issues, and assembly problems
  • Assist with root-cause investigations and corrective actions
  • Maintain fastener data, torque specifications, joint calculations, and change records

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical, automotive, materials, or a closely related engineering discipline
  • Working knowledge of mechanics of materials, including stress and strain, fatigue, preload, and friction
  • Basic understanding of machine design principles
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings, GD&T, and basic CAD models
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities
  • Comfort performing engineering calculations with calculation tools
  • Effective communication skills for cross-functional teamwork
  • Willingness to learn and consistently follow GM fastening standards, tools, and procedures
  • Must not require GM immigration-related sponsorship now or in the future, including H-1B, OPT, STEM OPT, CPT, TN, or J-1 support
