Senior Embedded Software Engineer – Canada Remote

Develop safety-critical ECU firmware for Hexagon Mining’s digital mining and vehicle-control technologies. Design, test, and commission embedded systems for production use.

Description

  • Create, debug, and maintain embedded C and C++ firmware for safety-related vehicle-control ECUs
  • Take firmware from defined requirements through verified release
  • Build and maintain vehicle communications using CAN 2.0A/B, J1939, higher-layer CAN protocols, and serial links
  • Develop I/O and actuation software for digital and analogue inputs, PWM and proportional outputs, including signal conditioning, scaling, calibration, and plausibility checks
  • Implement diagnostics, fault detection, and fail-safe operation through watchdogs, monitors, fault classification, and safe-state transitions
  • Help migrate and modernize the production firmware platform for current hardware
  • Develop from decomposed, traceable requirements while maintaining two-way traceability
  • Create and maintain design documents, interface specifications, and verification records
  • Conduct and contribute to peer design and code reviews
  • Create and maintain automated embedded unit, integration, and hardware-in-the-loop tests
  • Enhance CI/CD pipelines for embedded builds, static analysis, automated testing, version control, and release packaging
  • Work with Linux-based coprocessors and services supporting data logging, connectivity, remote diagnostics, and observability
  • Support bench, vehicle, and field commissioning while investigating integration-test issues
  • Partner with hardware and electrical engineers, system architects, functional safety specialists, application software teams, and product management

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in electrical or electronic engineering, computer engineering, mechatronics, computer science, or a related field, or equivalent demonstrated experience
  • At least 10 years of professional embedded software development experience
  • At least 2 years of production firmware development on 32-bit microcontrollers
  • Expert knowledge of embedded C and working proficiency in C++
  • Experience with fixed-point, resource-constrained programming and codebases that prohibit dynamic memory allocation
  • Experience with bare-metal or RTOS development, including interrupt handling, priority design, scheduling, cyclic tasks, timing and latency analysis, and multicore systems
  • Ability to interpret hardware schematics, MCU datasheets, and reference manuals to configure peripherals, drivers, and I/O
  • Hands-on experience with CAN 2.0A/B and J1939 or a comparable higher-layer protocol
  • Experience defining and maintaining message sets and signal databases
  • Experience analyzing buses and troubleshooting faults with standard CAN tools
  • Practical experience using debug probes, oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and bus loggers
  • Experience working to enforced coding standards such as MISRA and using static analysis
  • Comfort with Linux development environments, Git workflows, code review, and CI/CD pipelines
  • Experience with TCP/IP networking and embedded Linux device-to-cloud connectivity on Arm-based processors
  • Preferred: experience with multicore automotive-grade microcontrollers and commercially safety-certified ECU platforms
  • Preferred: experience with containerized build environments and self-hosted CI runners
  • Preferred: experience maintaining Yocto or Buildroot BSPs and layers, plus kernel and device-tree configuration
  • Preferred: experience with requirements management tools and Jira, Confluence, or equivalent platforms
  • Preferred: experience producing formal, traceable requirements and interface control documents
  • Preferred: Python and shell scripting experience for test automation, tooling, and data analysis
  • Ability to submit a resume and cover letter
