Director of Commissioning - Raleigh, NC

Lead commissioning, startup, and FDA validation activities for life sciences and advanced manufacturing design-build projects at Pond & Company. Oversee commissioning teams, proposals, client coordination, and multidisciplinary construction support.

Description

  • Oversee the commissioning group’s workload.
  • Mentor, manage, and recruit commissioning personnel.
  • Support proposals and develop fee estimates for commissioning opportunities.
  • Generate new business for Pond in a seller-doer role.
  • Coordinate commissioning activities across multidisciplinary construction projects.
  • Create and implement standardized startup and commissioning procedures.
  • Support early design and construction activities by establishing Installation Work Packages, checklists, and documented turnover systems.
  • Provide pre-construction estimates and schedules for startup and commissioning work.
  • Prepare proposals and estimates for startup and commissioning services outside Pond’s Design-Build portfolio.
  • Coordinate pre-startup and startup activities with clients, vendors, and contractors.
  • Support jobsite startup activities for systems and equipment while documenting completion progress.
  • Troubleshoot systems and equipment with Pond’s design and construction teams, vendors, and contractors to support client turnover.
  • Assemble closeout documentation, including O&M manuals, spare parts lists, drawings, and warranty records.
  • Support Factory Acceptance Testing when required by clients.
  • Assist clients with FDA validation activities, including SAT, IQ, and OQ, as needed.

Requirements

  • At least 10 years of relevant experience.
  • A bachelor’s degree in engineering, construction management, or a related field is required.
  • At least four years of experience starting up process and industrial equipment, HVAC systems, and related instrumentation and controls.
  • Ability to interpret and redline design drawings and Issued For Construction (IFC) documentation.
  • Experience supervising small to mid-sized teams is preferred.
  • Experience with equipment, mechanical, instrumentation and controls, and electrical startups.
  • Experience commissioning facility systems.
  • Experience commissioning specialized equipment and systems.
  • Basic project management and planning skills.
  • Strong troubleshooting ability.
  • Customer service skills.
  • Knowledge of industrial safety practices.
  • Familiarity with chillers, boilers, steam, pumps, fans, oxidizers, compressed gas storage and distribution, nitrogen, switchgear, heat exchangers, ambient air testing and balancing, air pressure controls, and fire protection systems.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively, maintain a positive attitude, multitask, and produce high-quality work independently.
  • Willingness and ability to continue learning and developing professionally.
  • Ability to travel 25–50%.
