Data Engineer I (AWS, Python, SQL) at Travelers

Build and support AWS, Python, and SQL data solutions for Travelers’ insurance pricing platforms. Help deliver reliable pipelines and analytics assets for General Liability and CMP pricing.

Description

  • Develop and operationalize complex data solutions
  • Resolve data issues, apply transformations, and recommend cleansing and quality improvements
  • Design fit-for-purpose data solutions
  • Evaluate data sources for analytical value and recommend suitable inputs
  • Apply data governance, security, and quality practices
  • Work with cross-functional teams to support delivery and help end users understand data products and analytical environments
  • Analyze, assess, and resolve moderate-complexity data and system defects and incidents
  • Validate data movement, transformation code, and related data components
  • Support Business Insurance General Liability and CMP pricing decisions with reliable, production-ready data assets
  • Contribute to modernization initiatives and the advancement of pricing capabilities
  • Carry out additional responsibilities as assigned

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, a related STEM discipline, or equivalent education and/or professional experience
  • Six years of relevant experience
  • Two additional years of software or data engineering experience
  • Practical experience with cloud platforms, preferably AWS, including implementing models in the cloud
  • Proficiency in Python and SQL
  • Experience applying data engineering principles and developing and maintaining data pipelines
  • Experience with AI-native solutions and modern software engineering practices, including APIs, microservices, and automated testing
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver high-quality work at a consistent, predictable pace
  • Ability to complete robust solutions while balancing competing tradeoffs
  • Strong grasp of applicable technical concepts and industry developments
  • Deep knowledge of the systems you have worked on and working familiarity with related systems
  • Strong problem-solving ability with an emphasis on resilient, durable systems
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience leading or mentoring engineers and fostering a safe, inclusive workplace
  • Self-directed approach with a history of identifying opportunities and driving improvements proactively
  • Insurance industry experience or exposure is preferred but not required, as is a strong willingness to learn the domain
  • Experience with Infrastructure as Code and DevOps tools, including Terraform and CI/CD pipelines, is preferred but not required
