Coding Auditor and Educator

WVU Medicine’s Professional Coding Auditor-Educator trains coding staff and leads quality audits. The role supports accurate coding, regulatory compliance, staff development, and electronic medical record data governance.

Description

  • Train WVU Healthcare coding staff under the direction of Coding Managers
  • Oversee coding audits and education plans, and conduct quality reviews with ongoing feedback
  • Apply ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, CPT, and related references and software to support accurate coding and MS-DRG, HCC, and APR-DRG assignment
  • Manage training for designated coding personnel, track their development, and report progress
  • Lead quality improvement audits and training for assigned coding staff
  • Provide coding expertise to coders, clinical documentation improvement teams, providers, revenue cycle staff, specialty groups, and meetings
  • Serve as a super user for coding-related electronic medical record systems and support EMR data governance
  • Maintain policies, procedures, work queues, and training materials
  • Communicate with coding staff, medical staff, the Physician Advisor, department chairs, and department administrators
  • Plan, facilitate, conduct, track, analyze trends in, and report internal quality reviews
  • Develop and use audit tools to monitor coding accuracy, documentation gaps, and billing
  • Coordinate external agency audits, including data collection, exit conferences, and final reports
  • Coordinate coding and documentation denial reviews and help prepare appeal letters
  • Report coding, documentation, audit, and activity issues to Coding Leadership
  • Follow through on audit recommendations, including coder education, coding changes, and rebills
  • Extract and analyze data, and develop action plans as needed
  • Help onboard new Coding Specialists
  • Keep Coding Specialists informed about compliance and regulatory changes
  • Stay current on coding updates, state and federal regulations, and coding resources
  • Develop curriculum for the WVU Healthcare Coding Certificate Program and assist with special EMR data governance projects as needed
  • Use curriculum and course systems, administer exams, and support the testing and installation of system upgrades.

Requirements

  • Graduate of a Health Information Technology (HIT) or equivalent program plus five years of coding experience; or graduate of a Medical Coding Certification Program plus five years of coding experience; or a high school diploma or equivalent plus eight years of coding experience
  • Hold one of these certifications: RHIA, RHIT, COC, CCS, or CPC
  • Preferred: extensive experience with ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, CPT, MS-DRG, HCC, and APR-DRG assignment; multispecialty, E&M, and procedural or surgical coding; and government billing and coding regulations
  • Previous supervisory or project management experience preferred
  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Knowledge of healthcare compliance, revenue cycle operations, and auditing methods
  • Ability to mentor, educate, and train others
  • Ability to meet quality and productivity standards
  • Ability to manage high-stress and critical situations calmly and professionally
  • Ability to maintain accuracy amid frequent interruptions
  • Sound independent decision-making skills
