Principal Data Engineer - Azure & Microsoft Fabric (Hybrid UK)
Lead Breedon Group’s Azure and Microsoft Fabric data platform for construction materials operations. Build secure data products, pipelines, and AI-ready retrieval capabilities across the enterprise.

- Provide hands-on technical leadership across the design, delivery, and ongoing enhancement of Breedon’s enterprise data platform
- Serve as the senior data engineering authority, shaping architecture, technology choices, engineering methods, and solution quality
- Define and oversee engineering standards, reference architectures, reusable patterns, coding conventions, and delivery frameworks
- Direct technical design reviews, data modelling decisions, and architecture assurance
- Build, refine, and optimise cloud data platforms and pipelines with Microsoft Fabric, Azure, and associated technologies
- Implement practices for testing, data quality, monitoring, observability, security, and deployment
- Modernise legacy solutions, reduce technical debt, strengthen reliability, improve performance, and manage cloud costs
- Assess emerging technologies and lead technical discovery and proof-of-concept work
- Help shape the data strategy, architecture roadmap, and future technology direction
- Lead complex technical programmes while mentoring engineers, encouraging knowledge sharing, and building team capability
- Partner with Data & Analytics, Technology, and business teams to make trusted data easier to find, access, and apply to analytics, automation, and AI

- Hands-on experience designing and implementing Azure analytical platforms with Azure Databricks, Azure Data Factory, Azure Data Lake Storage, Delta Lake, Unity Catalog, PySpark, SQL, Python, and Azure DevOps
- Experience engaging senior stakeholders to define the strategy, objectives, and value of a central enterprise cloud data platform
- Practical use of DevOps methods covering source control, branching, pull requests, code reviews, testing, and release management
- Understanding of CI/CD for data pipelines and platform components
- Experience coaching and mentoring data engineers toward successful delivery
- Knowledge of AI-oriented data engineering, including RAG systems, vector databases, embedding pipelines, and semantic indexing
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues and stakeholders
- Ability to map processes and produce supporting documentation
- Experience creating test plans and managing issues through resolution
- Strong communication and collaboration skills across business stakeholders and Breedon Technology Services
- Advanced technical capability in designing, implementing, and maintaining high-quality services
- Ability to research and assess emerging technology developments
- Capability to analyse and troubleshoot platform issues
