Waterfront Structural Engineering Intern (Onsite)

Support the design and delivery of waterfront and marine infrastructure projects as a structural engineering intern at Moffatt & Nichol. Contribute to engineering calculations, inspections, construction administration, and multidisciplinary project work.

Description

  • Contribute to structural engineering project teams and related technical disciplines
  • Analyze and design waterfront and marine facilities, including piers, wharves, bulkheads, seawalls, offshore platforms, dolphins, catwalks, utility supports, drainage structures, retaining walls, towers, and foundations
  • Apply timber, structural steel, reinforced and prestressed concrete, aluminum, and composite materials in design work
  • Assist with preparing plans, specifications, calculations, and technical reports
  • Support design problem-solving through field investigations, inspections, detailed design, calculation checks, and coordination
  • Prepare construction quantity estimates
  • Work with architects, engineers, scientists, and project managers on multidisciplinary assignments
  • Conduct structural and construction site inspections and document findings in inspection reports
  • Assist with office-based construction administration, including shop drawing and technical submittal reviews
  • Develop basic drawings, models, calculations, data sets, or code under direct supervision
  • Work mainly in the office, with occasional visits to project sites

Requirements

  • Currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in structural engineering or civil engineering with a structural emphasis
  • Entering the final year of an eligible bachelor’s degree program after the summer employment period
  • Master’s degree students are preferred
  • Completed coursework in engineering materials
  • Completed coursework in structural analysis
  • Completed at least one materials design course in reinforced concrete or structural steel
  • Working toward an EIT certification or already holding one, preferably
  • Previous related internship experience is preferred but not required
  • Field investigation experience or capability is preferred
  • Preferred software experience includes AutoCAD, SAP2000, LPile, Mathcad, and Bluebeam
  • Strong verbal, written, and presentation communication skills
  • Able to successfully complete a post-offer pre-employment background check compliant with NIST 800-171
  • Legally authorized to obtain employment in the United States and provide required hiring documentation
  • Able to travel across unpaved or natural terrain while carrying equipment during some site visits
