Staff Backend Software Engineer, Identity Decisioning — Affirm (Remote)

Lead backend engineering for identity decisioning, KYC, and lifecycle systems supporting Affirm’s buy-now-pay-later platform. Set technical direction and reliability practices for globally distributed services.

Description

  • Set the team’s technical direction over a year-long planning horizon
  • Translate team strategy into high-impact business initiatives
  • Partner with product, design, and analytics across the development lifecycle
  • Identify and manage technical debt, risks, trade-offs, and long-term sustainability
  • Define and champion backend solutions and operational practices
  • Own team operations and service availability, including monitoring, triage, playbooks, policies, testing, and alerting
  • Contribute to ongoing maintenance and on-call responsibilities
  • Set expectations for code reviews and technical design
  • Promote engineering excellence through documentation and technical presentations
  • Grow team capability through feedback, mentorship, and role modeling

Requirements

  • At least 8 years of experience designing, building, and launching large-scale backend systems with languages such as Python or Kotlin
  • Deep experience engineering highly available distributed systems
  • Practical experience with AWS, MySQL, Spark, and Kubernetes
  • A track record of delivering major features or system components—or retiring legacy functionality—through structured technical and execution plans
  • Strong ability to produce clear, maintainable code
  • Capability to work from language-level details through large-scale system architecture
  • Evidence of professional growth and impact through seeking and applying peer feedback
  • Excellent written and verbal communication
  • Equivalent practical experience or a bachelor’s degree in a related discipline
