Senior SQL Server Database Administrator (Portugal Remote)

Remote SQL Server DBA role with Expleo Group, focused on VMware and Azure environments. The position covers automation, reliability, incident ownership, and Dynamics data integration.

Description

  • Administer SQL Server platforms across on-premises VMware and Azure Cloud environments
  • Install, configure, patch, and maintain SQL Server instances and databases
  • Automate recurring database administration activities
  • Develop, review, and optimise stored procedures, queries, and indexes while resolving performance issues
  • Oversee backups, restores, security, access controls, and database health
  • Serve as a technical escalation point and coordinate with vendors on complex issues
  • Perform daily production checks covering system health, overnight jobs, monitoring, and alerts
  • Monitor database platforms with Redgate SQL Monitor and Azure Monitor, refining alert thresholds as needed
  • Join daily cross-functional stand-ups and track delivery through Azure DevOps boards
  • Process ITSM incidents, business-as-usual tasks, and service requests through completion
  • Own incidents as the designated responsible individual, from triage and resolution through root-cause analysis and blameless post-mortems
  • Automate alert handling and drive database incidents through closure
  • Raise, document, and implement governed changes, including presenting proposals to the Change Advisory Board
  • Apply data protection controls to PII and participate in Data Protection Impact Assessment processes
  • Keep technical and business stakeholders informed throughout incidents and changes
  • Reduce operational toil with PowerShell/dbatools, T-SQL, SQL Agent or Elastic Jobs, and Azure DevOps pipelines
  • Create runbooks and self-healing remediation for recurring alerts
  • Integrate database changes into CI/CD workflows using Redgate or SSDT with release validation
  • Support project delivery alongside BAU work and contribute to the client change portfolio and roadmap
  • Support Dynamics case and claims data flows through Azure Data Factory pipelines
  • Assist with Azure Synapse, ETL, and batch-processing activities
  • Provide guidance on database reliability, cost, and security, including VMware-to-Azure migrations
  • Implement least-privilege access, auditing, and encryption standards
  • Maintain documentation, runbooks, procedures, and provisioning records in Confluence

Requirements

  • Demonstrated hands-on experience as a SQL Server DBA, including administration, configuration, and performance tuning
  • Experience running SQL Server in VMware-virtualised and Azure Cloud environments, including Azure SQL or SQL Server on Azure VMs
  • Expertise in high availability and disaster recovery using Always On Availability Groups, FCIs, log shipping, geo-replication, and tested backup and restore procedures
  • Practical knowledge of SRE principles, including SLIs, SLOs, toil reduction, root-cause analysis, and post-incident reviews
  • Strong T-SQL capability for writing, troubleshooting, and optimising stored procedures
  • Scripting and automation experience with PowerShell/dbatools, T-SQL, and Python
  • Experience with ITSM practices covering incident, service request, change management, and CAB processes
  • Experience using Azure DevOps boards for task tracking and delivery
  • Strong technical documentation skills, including experience with Confluence
  • Clear communication skills when working with technical and business stakeholders
  • Experience protecting sensitive or PII data and applying GDPR and DPIA controls
  • Preferred: experience with Redgate tools, Azure Monitor, and Log Analytics
  • Preferred: experience with Azure Data Factory, Azure Synapse Analytics, and ETL or batch processing
  • Preferred: experience supporting Microsoft Dynamics data flows and integrations
  • Preferred: database CI/CD experience with Azure DevOps pipelines and exposure to Infrastructure as Code with Bicep or Terraform
  • Preferred: experience with Azure cost optimisation and FinOps for data platforms
  • Preferred certifications include Microsoft Azure Database Administrator Associate (DP-300), Azure Administrator (AZ-104), VMware VCP, ITIL Foundation, or SRE Foundation
