Senior Software Engineer, Front End and Back End (Remote)

Build and improve front-end and back-end systems supporting scalable government digital services at Ad Hoc. Lead technical work, resolve complex issues, coordinate integrations, and mentor engineers.

Description

  • Work as an experienced individual contributor on a software engineering team
  • Help manage scope, timelines, and delivery with limited leadership supervision
  • Advance long-term program objectives and execute the program’s development strategy
  • Act as the primary technical discipline lead in stakeholder engagements
  • Take ownership of application code contributions through technical expertise and accountability
  • Manage integrations and dependencies across related technical domains, systems, and ecosystems
  • Design, build, test, maintain, and enhance front-end and back-end software
  • Investigate complex technical problems and recommend improvements to systems and processes
  • Coach and support junior and mid-level engineers
  • Explain technical concepts, risks, issues, and progress to colleagues, clients, and stakeholders
  • Take part in technical interviews and assess engineering candidates
  • Develop and assess solutions to technical and process-related challenges
  • Lead small projects, technical efforts, and temporary team structures
  • Create and present design documents, system diagrams, technical guidance, and other engineering deliverables

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree plus at least seven years of professional software engineering experience
  • Relevant professional experience may replace formal education where permitted
  • Expertise in at least one technical area, such as front-end, back-end, full-stack, or infrastructure engineering
  • Professional experience designing, developing, testing, and maintaining production applications
  • Background diagnosing complex technical issues and helping deliver scalable, maintainable software
  • Strong ability to explain technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences
  • Experience providing engineering guidance, mentorship, or peer support
  • Must satisfy applicable contractual or labor-category requirements for education and professional experience
  • Preferred: experience with both front-end and back-end technologies in a full-stack setting
  • Preferred: experience building modern web applications and APIs
  • Preferred: familiarity with JavaScript frameworks including React, Angular, or Vue
  • Preferred: experience with Java, Python, Node.js, or comparable back-end technologies
  • Preferred: experience with relational or NoSQL databases
  • Preferred: experience with AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud
  • Preferred: familiarity with CI/CD, automated testing, and current software development practices
  • Preferred: experience working in Agile or iterative development environments
  • Preferred: experience mentoring engineers or providing technical direction
  • Preferred: experience collaborating with clients, product teams, designers, and technical stakeholders
  • Preferred: experience supporting government or federal programs
  • Preferred: knowledge of accessibility, security, performance, and scalable application design
