Senior Platform Reliability Engineer — Germany Remote

Lead the architecture, operation, and reliability of Contabo’s shared infrastructure and observability systems. Help strengthen the cloud hosting platform serving customers in more than 190 countries.

Description

  • Own the architecture of shared infrastructure services
  • Manage API gateway and ingress, persistent storage, secrets and identity systems, edge security and WAF, and observability services
  • Investigate under-documented systems and address identified weaknesses
  • Assess aging components through build-versus-buy analysis
  • Determine whether legacy components should be repaired, replaced, or retired
  • Design and implement an on-call operating model
  • Develop runbooks for platform and infrastructure incidents
  • Advance observability through distributed tracing, SLOs and SLIs, and actionable dashboards
  • Operate and extend Prometheus, Grafana, Alloy, and OpenTelemetry environments
  • Participate in system design reviews and apply core infrastructure principles to services
  • Provide guidance on shared infrastructure to multiple engineering teams
  • Document technical knowledge and share it consistently across the organization
  • Eliminate platform-wide single points of failure and address known risks
  • Travel occasionally for datacenter visits and team offsites

Requirements

  • At least seven years of experience in platform engineering, infrastructure, or SRE
  • Ideally, experience owning a private cloud or IaaS platform end to end
  • Hands-on production experience with distributed storage, particularly Ceph
  • Experience with Kubernetes persistent storage, Longhorn, or an equivalent technology
  • Experience operating API gateways and ingress solutions such as Kong or NGINX Ingress
  • Experience troubleshooting CORS and rate-limiting issues
  • Experience with CDN and edge security, DDoS mitigation, WAF configuration, and firewall-rule design
  • Strong understanding of load balancing, caching, sharding and replication, consistency models, and message queues
  • Experience designing or improving observability through tracing, metrics, and SLOs/SLIs is desirable
  • Experience with Vault, Keycloak, NATS, on-call operations, and incident runbooks is a plus
  • Calm and effective when working with mature systems that are not fully documented
  • Ability to serve as a cross-team technical resource and share and document knowledge
  • Professional fluency in English
  • German, CKA/CKS or Ceph certifications, and Proxmox/OpenStack experience are additional advantages
