Senior Manager, Data Platform Engineering at Airwallex

Lead Airwallex’s data platform engineering organization supporting financial infrastructure. Shape Databricks lakehouse, ingestion, streaming, and canonical financial data systems.

Description

  • Build and lead a high-performing data platform engineering team through technical guidance, mentorship, career development, and clear ownership.
  • Define the technical strategy for high-volume financial data ingestion spanning payment processors, banks, billing systems, and ERP/GL platforms.
  • Advance the Databricks lakehouse with Spark, Delta Lake, Unity Catalog, dbt, Python, and SQL.
  • Establish practices for data contracts, schema evolution, drift detection, data quality, and canonical financial models.
  • Move the platform from batch processing toward near-real-time workflows using Kafka, CDC, micro-batching, incremental processing, and Dagster.
  • Own the architecture of the canonical financial models that support the accounting engine.
  • Work with infrastructure and platform teams to strengthen observability, alerting, incident response, recovery, and operational readiness.
  • Set infrastructure direction across GCP, Terraform, Kubernetes/GKE, Helm, GitOps, and CI/CD.
  • Oversee migrations from legacy pipelines to the lakehouse, including parity checks, phased releases, and rollback planning.
  • Improve performance and control costs across PostgreSQL, Databricks, and high-scale data workloads.
  • Collaborate with product, accounting, ML, and platform leaders to turn business needs into scalable data platform capabilities.
  • Establish engineering direction through architecture reviews, design documentation, technical standards, and long-range platform roadmaps.
  • Promote AI-assisted engineering while upholding expectations for code quality, testing, security, and reliability.

Requirements

  • At least eight years in data platform, backend, or infrastructure engineering, including substantial experience leading engineering teams.
  • Demonstrated success managing and developing senior engineers and technical leads while building strong, autonomous teams.
  • Advanced knowledge of data platforms, distributed systems, data modeling, and production data pipelines.
  • Strong Python and SQL skills, with hands-on experience in Spark, Databricks, Delta Lake, dbt, and modern lakehouse architectures.
  • Experience developing dependable ingestion systems with large backfills, incremental processing, checkpointing, rate-limit management, idempotency, and failure recovery.
  • Solid understanding of streaming and event-driven systems, including Kafka, CDC, and micro-batching.
  • Experience with orchestration platforms such as Dagster and with designing for freshness, partitioning, and incremental computation.
  • Experience tuning PostgreSQL and analytical workloads for performance and cost efficiency.
  • Experience running production infrastructure on GCP, plus familiarity with Terraform, Kubernetes/GKE, Helm, GitOps, and CI/CD.
  • Strong command of observability, reliability engineering, and production operations.
  • Excellent technical communication skills and the ability to influence architecture and engineering decisions across teams.
  • Experience directing complex technical migrations while balancing long-term platform strategy with immediate business priorities.
  • Motivation to build teams and infrastructure for reliable, scalable, mission-critical financial systems.
