Senior Government Accountant

Lead governmental accounting, audits, payroll, and financial reporting for Merit System agencies serving Alabama municipalities and Jefferson County.

Description

  • Maintain accounts payable, receivable, banking, general ledger, grant, and budget accounts.
  • Process payments and prepare or review transaction reports.
  • Oversee inventory and coordinate contract reviews.
  • Manage accounts payable and receivable workflows, including requisitions, payments, invoices, statements, and fund reconciliations.
  • Oversee internal and external financial audits and implement resulting changes.
  • Manage banking records and research banking and account information.
  • Complete monthly, quarterly, and annual financial closes and balance sheet reconciliations.
  • Oversee general ledger maintenance, journal entries, adjustments, audits, and reconciliations.
  • Manage confidential government financial records and reporting in compliance with GAAP and GASB.
  • Oversee employee payroll accounting and processing.
  • Continue professional development and stay current with relevant practices, rules, laws, policies, and guidelines.
  • Serve as a lead worker and may supervise staff.

Requirements

  • Experience performing general ledger reconciliations in government, nonprofit, corporate, or public accounting.
  • Experience preparing journal entries, including debits and credits, in government, nonprofit, corporate, or public accounting.
  • Experience preparing financial statements or reports, such as balance sheets and income statements, in government, nonprofit, corporate, or public accounting.
  • Experience using Excel, including spreadsheet formatting, formulas, and logic.
  • Experience using financial management software such as SAP, Incode, or QuickBooks.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or a related field such as Finance or Business, with 15 semester hours of accounting coursework including at least one intermediate-level class (300 level or above), or experience as an Accountant in the Merit System.
