Senior Controls Engineer – Buffalo, NY (Onsite)

Lead controls, automation, robotics, and electrical systems at The J.M. Smucker Co.’s Buffalo pet-food facility. Drive capital projects, reliability, safety, modernization, and technician development.

Description

  • Own technical leadership for site controls, automation, and electrical power systems
  • Lead automation, controls, and electrical infrastructure projects that improve reliability, efficiency, and plant performance
  • Set the controls and power systems roadmap, including modernization programs and technology upgrades
  • Work with Operations, Maintenance, and Engineering to resolve complex manufacturing issues and reduce losses
  • Train and mentor Electrical & Instrumentation technicians
  • Support robotics, PLCs, HMIs, MES applications, and other advanced manufacturing technologies
  • Use manufacturing data and analytics to strengthen operational performance and decision-making
  • Promote electrical safety and maintain compliance with NFPA, OSHA, and company requirements
  • Manage capital projects from initial concept through startup
  • Shape the Buffalo facility’s technology strategy through innovation and continuous improvement

Requirements

  • A two-year diploma from an accredited technical or vocational college in automation or controls, or a bachelor’s degree in engineering
  • Knowledge of controls or electrical engineering principles
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Manufacturing experience in food, pet food, consumer packaged goods, or a related industry
  • Knowledge of machine or process control hardware, instrumentation, and software, including Allen Bradley PLCs, ControlLogix, Wonderware HMI, and Rockwell FactoryTalk
  • Experience with robotics and automation platforms such as Motoman or equivalent systems
  • Working knowledge of NFPA and OSHA electrical standards
  • Strong troubleshooting, project management, and continuous improvement capabilities
  • Interest in learning new technologies, resolving technical problems, and developing colleagues
  • Availability for off-shift work, including nights, weekends, and holidays
  • Ability to frequently lift objects weighing up to 50 pounds
  • Ability to work in a loud manufacturing setting
  • Ability to meet the physical requirements of the role, including standing, walking, reaching, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling
