Senior Controls Engineer, Advanced Manufacturing

Lead PLC, robotics, and industrial automation initiatives for Wabtec, a global rail equipment and solutions provider. Shape scalable manufacturing controls across sites worldwide.

Description

  • Collaborate with operations, product engineering, maintenance, quality, procurement, IT, OT, EHS, and business leadership
  • Design, implement, secure, and maintain controls systems throughout the global supply chain
  • Define controls architectures, make technical decisions, establish standards, and deliver safe, maintainable, scalable, production-ready automation
  • Direct or support controls architecture, design, programming, integration, commissioning, and optimization
  • Create controls concepts and specifications, conduct technical reviews, support capital projects, resolve complex issues, and standardize effective solutions
  • Manage controls initiatives from initial concept and architecture through production launch
  • Create programming standards and approved solution patterns
  • Program, assess, and troubleshoot PLC, HMI, motion, safety, and industrial communications applications
  • Lead controls design reviews and confirm technical, safety, maintainability, and cybersecurity compliance
  • Prepare capital estimates, controls scopes, test plans, and technical RFQ requirements
  • Lead or assist with vendor selection, panel and software reviews, FAT, SAT, commissioning, and startup
  • Investigate complex controls, network, motion, robotics interface, and manufacturing data problems
  • Improve systems for reliability, cycle time, diagnostics, maintainability, and production results
  • Find effective controls solutions and replicate them across manufacturing locations
  • Contribute to the automation roadmap, governance model, and technology strategy
  • Assess emerging controls, connectivity, simulation, and AI-enabled manufacturing technologies
  • Coach site controls personnel and provide senior technical direction

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical, controls, automation, mechatronics, computer engineering, or a related field
  • At least seven years of experience in industrial controls, automation, systems integration, or advanced manufacturing
  • Proven experience leading major controls and capital automation projects
  • Advanced PLC and HMI programming expertise, supported by disciplined software development practices
  • Strong knowledge of machine safety, motion control, robotics integration, industrial networking, instrumentation, and manufacturing processes
  • Experience creating controls architectures, functional specifications, standards, test plans, and commissioning documentation
  • Strength in project leadership, technical mentoring, structured troubleshooting, and cross-functional collaboration
  • Willingness to travel as needed to support enterprise manufacturing sites
  • Experience with Rockwell Automation ControlLogix or CompactLogix, Studio 5000, FactoryTalk, or equivalent platforms
  • Experience with Siemens TIA Portal, S7 PLCs, WinCC, or other leading industrial controls platforms
  • Knowledge of EtherNet/IP, PROFINET, Modbus TCP, OPC UA, and managed industrial switching
  • Experience with machine-safety PLCs, safety relays, risk-reduction functions, and validation support
  • Experience with servo systems, variable-frequency drives, coordinated motion, and precision process control
  • Experience integrating industrial robots, machine vision, automated material handling, and equipment
  • Familiarity with MES, SCADA, historians, OEE, databases, and manufacturing data collection
  • Experience with FAT, SAT, commissioning, production launch, and lifecycle support
  • Certification or formal expertise in Lean, Six Sigma, functional safety, networking, or controls platforms
