Horizon3.ai
Horizon3.ai
Horizon3.ai is a cybersecurity and artificial intelligence company founded in 2019 that develops autonomous penetration testing software. Its NodeZero platform helps organizations continuously evaluate their security posture by identifying exploitable attack paths across cloud, IoT, and on-premises environments. Designed as a self-service SaaS solution, NodeZero provides vulnerability insights without requiring persistent or credentialed agents. Horizon3.ai was founded by veterans of the US Special Operations and National Security sectors and focuses on helping security teams proactively address weaknesses before attackers can exploit them.

Principal Software Engineer, Agentic Data Platform

Set the technical direction for Horizon3.ai’s database platform, shaping PostgreSQL and graph data architecture for its autonomous cybersecurity product. Lead scalable schema and migration design while contributing production code and guiding engineers across teams.

Description

  • Set the Database Platform roadmap with engineering leaders and the Pentest Platform organization.
  • Make key database architecture decisions on schema design, partitioning, migrations, and scalability.
  • Write design documents that give the team a shared technical foundation.
  • Lead PostgreSQL expertise across query optimization, indexing, partitioning, replication, and connection pooling.
  • Shape the graph-based asset model for hosts, services, credentials, and vulnerabilities across penetration tests.
  • Lead schema reviews and ensure migrations are safe, reversible, and available without downtime.
  • Develop tools and engineering practices for rigorous schema changes.
  • Mentor P5 and P4 engineers through code and design reviews, and pairing.
  • Coordinate with Data Ingestion, Asset Inventory, API Platform, and Security Research on data contracts, query performance standards, and architectural guardrails.
  • Contribute production code and technical design documents as an individual contributor.

Requirements

  • Bring deep, proven PostgreSQL experience, including query planner internals, advanced indexing, partitioning, logical replication, vacuuming at scale, and connection pool tuning.
  • Have experience designing large-scale multi-tenant databases, including row-level security and tenant isolation.
  • Have experience with production schema migrations at scale, zero-downtime changes, backwards-compatible schema evolution, and tools such as Flyway or golang-migrate.
  • Know graph data models and databases such as Neo4j or AWS Neptune, or graph-like relational patterns such as recursive CTEs, ltree, or adjacency lists.
  • Write production application code in Go or Python.
  • Show a track record of defining database architecture at scale, from design through production, across multiple companies or teams.
  • Understand data architecture tradeoffs, including normalization versus denormalization, consistency versus availability, OLTP versus OLAP separation, and schema-first versus schema-last design.
  • Be able to plan schema designs for the long term and substantially larger data volumes.
  • Explain complex database decisions clearly in design documents, ADRs, and cross-team reviews.
  • Have driven database standards across multiple teams without direct reporting authority.
  • Have established database engineering practices, including schema review norms, migration safety standards, and query performance reviews.
  • Have developed engineers through code review, pair programming, and architectural mentorship.
  • Cybersecurity data experience, time-series databases, compliance, analytical queries or BI/reporting, and open-source database contributions are desirable.
  • Have a consumer broadband connection of at least 25 Mbps.

Benefits

  • A stock option equity package may be available.
  • Health, vision, and dental coverage for employees and their families.
  • Flexible vacation policy.
  • Generous parental leave.
  • Remote work flexibility.
  • Career development opportunities.
  • An inclusive, collaborative work culture.
  • Travel of up to 5% may be required.
