Part-Time Child Care Assistant

Support children’s development at the U.S. Coast Guard Child Development Center through activity planning, safety monitoring, and routine caregiving. Help deliver age-appropriate programs while supporting children’s emotional, social, intellectual, and physical well-being.

Description

  • Plan early childhood learning experiences with a range of materials
  • Support children’s healthy emotional, social, intellectual, and physical development
  • Collaborate with the director and teachers on age-appropriate curricula and activities
  • Help maintain an environment that encourages positive interactions among children and youth
  • Support and lead scheduled activities
  • Use approved child-guidance and youth-development practices when engaging with children and youth
  • Communicate professionally with staff, parents, and command personnel
  • Help track program participation and complete required daily records
  • Set up, organize, and maintain indoor and outdoor activity spaces and materials
  • Supervise children across classrooms, playgrounds, hallways, restrooms, study halls, lunch areas, and bus loading zones
  • Track children’s locations and maintain responsibility for their safety
  • Prepare and serve suitable snacks and meals when required
  • Provide routine caregiving and meet children’s physical needs
  • Carry out health checks and safeguard children’s health and well-being
  • Complete required reports and communicate with parents
  • Handle additional duties as assigned

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED credential
  • Ability to read, write, and speak English
  • At least one year of general experience working with children in a group program serving children or youth
  • Physical capacity to lift and carry up to 45 pounds or more, sit on and rise from the floor, walk, bend, stoop, and stand regularly
  • Willingness and ability to work indoors and outdoors
  • Ability to complete a Tier 1 background investigation, including state checks, at hiring and renew it every five years
  • Ability to pass the Civilian Medical Clearance Examination before placement and every two years thereafter
  • Authorization to work in the United States
  • Non-U.S. nationals applying for a DHS position must have lived in the United States or U.S. territories for at least three of the previous five years
  • Successful completion of a Federal Background check and all applicable pre-employment requirements
  • Males born after December 31, 1959, who are at least 18 years old must be registered with the Selective Service System unless exempt
  • Submission of a resume or another written application in English
  • Applicants cannot be employed within the chain of command of their relatives
