Learning Experience Developer – Canvas and Online Course Development

The University of Alberta is seeking a Learning Experience Developer to create accessible, multimedia-rich online courses. The role involves building Canvas courses and interactive learning resources with academic and instructional design teams.

Description

  • Create and deliver graduate and undergraduate credit and non-credit online courses
  • Apply established pedagogical and andragogical principles to digital learning development
  • Partner with instructional designers, project managers, academic leads, instructors, and subject matter experts
  • Develop engaging activities, interactive elements, branching scenarios, gamification, and multimedia
  • Create course templates, homepages, reusable structures, navigation, layouts, and branding
  • Build and format courses in Canvas using native LMS tools, HTML, and inline CSS
  • Incorporate external tools and assets, including Articulate Rise, Storyline, and Vyond
  • Produce presentations, podcasts, Pressbooks content, audio, animations, graphics, and interactive learning objects
  • Curate, adapt, and make minor edits to existing multimedia materials
  • Configure discussion forums, quizzes, polls, peer reviews, formative assessments, gradebooks, and rubrics
  • Add library materials, electronic texts, open educational resources, and other digital content
  • Perform quality assurance, accessibility, responsive design, functionality, usability, and user acceptance testing
  • Apply version control to learning objects and maintain reusable digital course content
  • Investigate and fix course functionality problems while documenting workflows and guidelines
  • Provide weekly updates on development progress and time allocation
  • Explore emerging technologies and contribute to professional development, communities of practice, and conferences

Requirements

  • An undergraduate degree in educational technology, design, instructional design, adult education, or a related discipline is required
  • A diploma combined with substantial online course development and multimedia experience may be considered
  • At least two years of experience developing online courses and multimedia is required
  • Practical ability to write HTML and inline CSS with code editors such as VS Code
  • Experience with authoring and media tools including Articulate Rise or Storyline, Adobe Creative Cloud, and Vyond
  • Working knowledge of AI tools and their ethical, appropriate use in design workflows
  • Experience developing custom courses directly in learning management systems such as Canvas
  • Experience incorporating and supporting Indigenous Initiatives and Access, Community and Belonging in digital learning experiences
  • Outstanding creativity and the ability to produce innovative, enriched online learning across varied modalities, technologies, and media
  • A multimedia portfolio demonstrating work such as graphics, animation, audio, or other multimedia
  • Knowledge of accessibility standards, Universal Design for Learning, and digital learning experience and user experience principles
  • Understanding of copyright law, fair use, Creative Commons licensing, and intellectual property rights
  • Ability to perform quality assurance reviews and user acceptance testing
  • Technical capability to diagnose and resolve issues affecting digital builds and multimedia
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities
