Lead Web Engineer - Urban Land Institute (Onsite)

Lead the modernization of Urban Land Institute’s WordPress and Azure web portfolio as a senior web engineering owner. Drive architecture, hosting, accessibility, integrations, and delivery for a nonprofit research and education organization.

Description

  • Lead the rebuild and consolidation of uli.org and related sites on a modern platform
  • Convert business goals into technical plans, scope, schedules, and architecture
  • Create prototypes and present solutions to stakeholders
  • Define information architecture, content models, and reusable templates
  • Plan and execute content migration, redirects, and search continuity
  • Implement analytics with GA4, Google Tag Manager, and Core Web Vitals targets
  • Assess CMS platforms such as Umbraco and communicate their trade-offs
  • Write, review, and maintain production code across ULI web properties
  • Develop and maintain WordPress themes, templates, plugins, custom post types, taxonomies, and multisite implementations
  • Design REST APIs and integrations with ULI databases and systems, including netFORUM
  • Deliver websites that meet WCAG 2.2 AA accessibility standards
  • Establish practices for version control, testing, code review, and documentation
  • Own Azure web hosting across App Services, storage, and networking
  • Administer CDN services, WAF rules, bot and DDoS mitigation, DNS, and TLS certificates
  • Maintain CI/CD pipelines, staging environments, and deployment processes
  • Monitor site health, availability, and performance while responding to incidents
  • Act as the primary developer for digital products used by members and staff
  • Support the launch and hosting of new platforms and integrations
  • Manage the web services ticket queue and resolve complex requests
  • Bring website maintenance and updates into the internal team
  • Manage and mentor the Senior Administrator, Web Services
  • Review deliverables from external agencies and developers
  • Partner with software, data, and project management teams
  • Improve the consolidated web portfolio’s speed, security, accessibility, and usability

Requirements

  • Progressive, hands-on experience developing websites and owning web platforms
  • A portfolio, GitHub profile, or other examples of personally built production web work
  • Advanced WordPress experience, including the block editor, custom post types, taxonomies, and multisite
  • Experience deploying and operating websites and web applications on Microsoft Azure
  • Experience designing and consuming REST APIs and connecting disparate systems
  • Experience delivering accessible websites that meet WCAG 2.2 AA
  • Ability to explain technical choices, trade-offs, and risks to non-technical colleagues
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, software engineering, information systems, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience
  • CMS migration leadership or project experience is preferred
  • Experience with Umbraco or another .NET CMS is preferred
  • Experience consolidating multiple websites into one platform is preferred
  • Experience mentoring or supervising technical personnel is preferred
  • Experience collaborating with external development agencies or contractors is preferred
  • Familiarity with association management or CRM platforms such as netFORUM or iMIS is preferred
  • Experience with headless or decoupled CMS implementations is preferred
  • Association, membership organization, or nonprofit experience is preferred; candidates must complete a technical assessment during the interview process.
