Distinguished Engineer, Developer Experience at CVS Health (Remote - Minnesota)

CVS Health is seeking a Distinguished Engineer to guide AI-enabled developer platforms, tooling, and open-source strategy. The role provides enterprise-wide architectural leadership across cloud-native engineering and software delivery.

Description

  • Own architecture, standards, and technical direction for a core area of the developer experience platform engineering portfolio
  • Act as the organization’s highest-level technical escalation point
  • Work with Acceleration leaders and engineering teams to coordinate internal developer platform investments, including CAP, CI/CD, and software supply chain security
  • Guide architecture decisions across Acceleration platforms, with emphasis on interoperability, AI-enabled systems, observability, and edge computing
  • Direct the organization’s strategy for an AI-enabled software development lifecycle
  • Assess and advance the use of AI coding assistants, agentic development tools, and AI-powered engineering workflows
  • Define AI-driven approaches to software planning, development, testing, deployment, and operations
  • Lead developer experience open-source strategy, including opportunity identification and licensing and intellectual property considerations
  • Advance key platforms, including Flip, toward open, AI-driven, and edge-enabled solutions
  • Collaborate with open-source communities and establish practices for responsible consumption and contribution
  • Influence senior and principal engineers and engineering leaders to raise technical standards and engineering quality
  • Assess build-versus-buy choices for developer productivity platforms, secrets management, AI infrastructure, and engineering tools
  • Conduct technical due diligence for vendor and open-source technology selections, including API gateways, feature-flagging tools, developer portals, and platform engineering products

Requirements

  • At least 12 years of software engineering experience, including substantial technical leadership in Principal, Staff+, or Distinguished Engineer positions
  • A record of setting technical strategy and architecture in large enterprise environments, ideally supporting organizations with more than 10,000 engineers
  • Hands-on expertise with internal developer platforms, Kubernetes infrastructure, cloud-native technologies, and CI/CD ecosystems
  • Practical experience with AI-assisted software development, including coding assistants, agentic frameworks, and AI-enabled SDLC practices
  • Proven ability to shape technical strategy and architecture across organizational boundaries without direct reporting authority
  • Active credibility in open-source communities through project contribution, maintenance, or leadership
  • Exceptional stakeholder management, executive communication, and cross-functional collaboration abilities
  • Experience assessing and implementing modern developer tools, platform engineering solutions, and software delivery technologies
  • Experience with enterprise API gateway platforms such as Apigee, Kong, Azure API Management, or comparable technologies
  • Background with feature-flagging platforms, developer portals, software supply chain security, or platform engineering products
  • Experience in highly regulated sectors such as healthcare, financial services, or other compliance-driven industries
  • A track record of leading enterprise AI transformation and scaling AI-enabled engineering practices across large organizations
  • Experience creating, governing, or accelerating enterprise open-source strategies and community engagement programs
  • Strong knowledge of observability, edge computing architectures, and current developer experience practices
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, computer science, information systems, or a related quantitative field, or equivalent professional experience
