Distributed Systems Software Engineer, Trust & Safety at Gamma (San Francisco Hybrid)

Build distributed trust and safety systems at Gamma, a creative collaboration platform serving more than 70 million users. Develop real-time infrastructure for detecting, preventing, and responding to fraud, abuse, spam, and malicious content.

Description

  • Lead detection and prevention systems that protect millions of daily users from fraud, abuse, spam, and malicious content.
  • Design scalable trust infrastructure for rate limiting, content scanning, anomaly detection, and account security.
  • Architect distributed systems, APIs, and high-volume event pipelines for real-time abuse detection.
  • Define and improve the data models and storage systems that support trust and safety operations.
  • Create investigation tools that help support teams respond to suspicious or malicious activity.
  • Apply AI and LLM-based detection to phishing, fraud, and malicious content generated by AI systems.
  • Develop automated workflows for triage and investigation.
  • Investigate and resolve complex security incidents.
  • Work with engineering and product teams to balance protection with user experience.
  • Guide Gamma’s long-term trust and safety strategy and technical roadmap.
  • Collaborate with colleagues across engineering, product, and design.

Requirements

  • At least five years of backend engineering experience delivering scalable, high-traffic production systems.
  • Strong systems thinking and experience developing highly available web APIs.
  • Strong command of backend technologies such as Node.js or Python.
  • Strong experience with PostgreSQL, Redis, or comparable database technologies.
  • Experience with event streaming platforms such as Redis or Kafka and high-volume event pipelines.
  • Practical experience implementing trust features including rate limiting, content detection, and fraud prevention.
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver complex, high-quality applications under demanding timelines.
  • A product-oriented mindset and an understanding of how technical choices affect user experience and business metrics.
  • Strong interest in security, user protection, and solving problems at scale.
  • Experience applying AI or LLMs to content moderation, or familiarity with TypeScript, Prisma, Apollo GraphQL, or AWS, is a plus.
  • Experience creating AI-assisted moderation pipelines or using frontier models for automated abuse detection and response is a plus.
  • Familiarity with the changing AI threat landscape is a plus.
  • Experience with real-time collaboration systems is a plus.
  • Currently located in the Bay Area or willing to relocate.
  • Willingness to work onsite in San Francisco four to five days per week.
  • Must state whether visa sponsorship to work in the United States is required.
