DevOps Engineer III - Remote, United States

Join Ad Hoc to build and operate AWS and Kubernetes infrastructure for government digital services. This role advances CI/CD, security, reliability, and developer experience for Veterans Affairs products.

Description

  • Contribute as an emerging individual contributor while developing leadership, mentoring, and technical guidance capabilities
  • Help manage scope, schedules, and delivery commitments with support from organizational leadership
  • Partner across teams to streamline and consolidate DevOps tools and services
  • Address operational and architectural challenges through simpler, more maintainable solutions
  • Execute cloud infrastructure and automated deployment work under the guidance of a senior engineer
  • Develop reusable libraries, modules, and packages for infrastructure engineering teams
  • Create and maintain cloud infrastructure that supports application workloads
  • Enhance tools and workflows that improve the engineering experience
  • Maintain CI/CD practices that help teams release higher-quality software more efficiently
  • Connect tooling for quality gates, security vulnerability detection, and static analysis
  • Create application testing and deployment pipelines with Jenkins, GitHub Actions, CircleCI, GitLab CI, or comparable automation platforms
  • Coordinate with government partners and application teams to satisfy security, SLA, and performance objectives
  • Participate in business-hours DevOps support rotations and provide after-hours on-call coverage

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree plus at least five years of professional software engineering experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Hands-on experience running AWS as a primary production cloud provider
  • Working knowledge of Kubernetes, including EKS or an equivalent platform, for deploying, troubleshooting, and managing containers
  • Proficiency with Terraform or a comparable infrastructure-as-code tool
  • Experience developing and maintaining CI/CD pipelines with GitHub Actions, Jenkins, or similar platforms
  • Comfort working in Linux environments with shell scripting, systemd, basic networking, and package management
  • Experience with containers, virtualization, networking, and load balancing or reverse-proxy systems
  • Strong written and verbal communication abilities
  • Ability to collaborate with engineers to investigate and resolve problems
  • Ability to communicate technical decisions and tradeoffs for complex infrastructure
  • Substantive participation in technical and delivery planning discussions
  • Availability for business-hours DevOps support rotations and after-hours on-call duty
  • U.S. citizenship or current legal authorization to work and reside in the United States without employer sponsorship
  • Ability to complete and maintain any required government background investigation
  • Preferred: hands-on experience with Terragrunt
  • Preferred: experience with Argo CD, Argo Workflows, or another GitOps deployment platform
  • Preferred: familiarity with HAProxy, OpenResty, NGINX, Envoy, or Kong
  • Preferred: proficiency in Go, Bash, Python, or another scripting or programming language
  • Preferred: experience creating GitHub Actions reusable workflows, composite actions, and self-hosted runners
  • Preferred: experience adding SAST, DAST, and dependency scanning to delivery pipelines
  • Preferred: experience in federal or government IT, including ATO processes, FedRAMP, or STIGs
  • Preferred: experience developing internal developer platforms or golden-path tooling
  • Preferred: experience with observability platforms such as Datadog or CloudWatch
