Database Reliability Engineering Manager at PrizePicks — Remote

Lead database reliability engineering for PrizePicks’ cloud infrastructure, data lifecycle, and live-event operations. Build resilient systems while developing technical leaders.

Description

  • Lead cloud database infrastructure across AlloyDB, Redis, and Kafka, including capacity planning, vendor management, committed-use strategy, and spending accountability.
  • Support identity and access modernization through migration to a contemporary identity platform, tighter controls for high-risk access, and an emergency break-glass process.
  • Set and execute data lifecycle strategy, including data aging, archiving, and retention across a multi-year horizon.
  • Help establish database observability practices spanning logs, metrics, and actionable alerts.
  • Direct high-availability operations during major live events through on-call design, war-room preparation, staffing plans, and vendor escalation.
  • Lead data-related business continuity and disaster recovery planning, testing, and execution.
  • Collaborate with Infrastructure on shared systems, caching, messaging and queues, and application-to-data infrastructure boundaries.
  • Oversee database security and compliance, including vulnerability remediation, edge protection, access controls, audits, and regulatory obligations.
  • Own database vendor partnerships and contracts, including budgets, renewals, and negotiations.
  • Hire and develop the team, strengthen technical leadership, delegate ownership, and create backup coverage for critical responsibilities.
  • Represent database reliability engineering in cross-functional work on launches, load testing, and migrations.
  • Balance keep-the-lights-on operations with productivity improvements while setting priorities for a multi-quarter infrastructure roadmap.

Requirements

  • At least five years of experience managing database, DevOps, or SRE teams, preferably supporting consumer products with real-time, high-concurrency, seasonal, or event-driven traffic.
  • Strong practical experience with cloud infrastructure, especially GCP, plus relational and non-relational databases such as AlloyDB, PostgreSQL, Redis, and MongoDB, and infrastructure as code using tools such as Crossplane, Cuelang, Terraform, or Ansible.
  • Experience leading identity and access management initiatives, operating modern observability and monitoring platforms, and establishing incident practices that remain effective during high-pressure events.
  • Proven ownership of cloud costs and vendor relationships, including committed-use or reserved-capacity planning, contract negotiations, and budget management.
  • Sound understanding of security practices and compliance expectations for a rapidly evolving consumer technology platform.
  • Demonstrated ability to coach technical leads, delegate thoughtfully, and use management to support and empower the team.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the judgment to surface risks early and clearly.
  • Experience working in a technology startup is highly valued.
  • DevOps, cloud, or SRE certifications are advantageous.
