Data Platform and Cloud Engineer, AI-Assisted Development (Remote, California)

Manage the company’s SQL Server and Azure data infrastructure while developing AI-assisted internal applications. Build reliable data pipelines, cloud systems, integrations, and automations for an insurance brokerage.

Description

  • Manage the health, performance, and security of the SQL Server and Azure SQL data warehouse.
  • Administer and optimize database environments through indexing, query tuning, backup and recovery, capacity planning, and patching.
  • Build, maintain, and monitor ETL/ELT pipelines sourcing agency management, carrier, finance, HR/payroll, and other business systems.
  • Design and maintain data normalization, transformation, and modeling processes.
  • Oversee schema changes, data quality checks, job orchestration, scheduled loads, pipeline failures, and data discrepancies.
  • Establish and enforce data access controls, retention procedures, and documentation standards.
  • Work with IT while following security, change management, access provisioning, and architecture standards.
  • Collaborate with BI and Analytics teams to provide clean, well-modeled data for dashboards, applications, and APIs.
  • Administer assigned areas of the Microsoft Azure subscription, including organization, RBAC, cost management, tagging, naming, and platform security.
  • Own the Azure infrastructure behind Liberty OS and Liberty Aura, covering provisioning, configuration, monitoring, patching, and capacity planning.
  • Lead legacy system and database decommissioning, including migration, archival, retention verification, resource retirement, and documentation.
  • Design, develop, and support internal applications and automations with AI-assisted development tools.
  • Convert business needs into internal tools, integrations, and automated workflows.
  • Use code review, version control, testing, and documentation throughout development.
  • Assess AI coding tools and workflows, and share practices that improve development efficiency and quality.
  • Create and maintain integrations between the data warehouse and internal business applications.
  • Handle production, sensitive, and regulated data according to security, compliance, and data-handling requirements.
  • Maintain a dotted-line reporting relationship with Technology Operations.

Requirements

  • At least six years administering SQL Server or a comparable relational database platform in production.
  • Practical experience building and maintaining ETL/ELT pipelines and data warehouse or data mart architectures.
  • Experience administering a Microsoft Azure subscription, including resource and subscription organization, Entra ID role-based access control, cost management, and platform security.
  • Advanced SQL skills covering query optimization, indexing strategy, and performance troubleshooting.
  • Experience using AI coding assistants or agents such as Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, or Cursor in a real development workflow.
  • Working knowledge of Python, C#, or JavaScript/TypeScript.
  • Familiarity with Git and standard software development lifecycle practices.
  • Strong troubleshooting ability and ownership of systems from end to end.
  • Experience migrating and retiring legacy systems or databases, including data migration, archival, and retention-compliant shutdown.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills.
  • Preferred: experience with Azure SQL Managed Instance or another cloud data platform.
  • Preferred: experience with infrastructure-as-code tools such as Bicep, ARM, or Terraform, along with Azure cost management or FinOps.
  • Preferred: experience with Tableau or another business intelligence or reporting platform.
  • Preferred: experience in insurance, brokerage, or financial services, or with Applied Epic or AMS360.
  • Preferred: experience building or integrating MCP servers or comparable agentic AI tool-calling architectures.
  • Preferred: exposure to data governance or regulatory compliance requirements.
  • Preferred: experience mentoring developers in AI-assisted development practices.
  • For positions requiring a state insurance license, meet applicable state licensing requirements and remain eligible for licensure.
